1861/71 HULL census - MAUD
« on: Tuesday 07 February 06 21:25 GMT (UK) »
Quite a while ago I was given infomation regarding my ancestor Samuel MAUD from the above censuses. But on everyone he has a different birthplace!

On the 1881 Hull census his birthplace is given as Halifax.

The 1871 (RG10/4782 Hull  F165/32)  I was told gives his birthplace as Hull, but could that be wrong, as they were living in Hull?

Likewise the 1861 (ERY  3593/24/72) states his birthplace as Lancaster.

Would it be possible for someone to check these references for me? If they are correct, has anyone any suggestions on how to find out more about him.  I have his marriage certificate giving (late)Samuel Maud, labourer as his father, but that's all  I have.
There appears to be a lot of SAMUEL MAUDs born in the Bradford area, but not Halifax, Hull or Lancaster!! He would have been born c 1829/30

Thank you,

Gill

Just a thought.
Would anyone be able to find him on the 1851 census, before he married?
Maybe in Hull or Halifax?

Hi Gill

The plot thickens!

I've checked the references for you and the places of birth given are correct for 1861, 71 and 1881.
I've also checked the 1851 census and the only Samuel Maud that fits the bill is born abt 1832, Bradford, living in Bradford, occupation 'taylor'.  HO107/2308 Folio 616 page 32.  Nil for Hull, (Hell) or Halifax! ;D

Sorry its not better news

Thank you very much for spending the time to  look.

I've had this information a while, and get it out every now and then thinking I'll miraculously discover something new!! And never get any further.
I'm wondering if father Samuel, as on the marriage certificate is actually correct and my Samuel Maud is the one from Halifax (on the IGI) whose father is Thomas !! ( I do have one ancestor who certainly has a ficticious father on his certificate)

Anyway, It looks like it's back in the dark hole, where it belongs!! At least for a while.

Thanks again,
Gill
