I use Family Historian.
Rock solid. Have never lost any data or had the program mess anything up in 5 years and I have a database of 14000-odd people (some of them very odd).
Dead easy to do the basic stuff, but very powerful if you want to dig deeper. Good support and a good user group, The author of the program is accessible and responds to requests for enhancements.
And its British!!!
