Census lookup please - Rickit
« on: Sunday 05 February 06 04:58 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

I'm not sure anyone can help me with this.   I went to FreeBMD and did a search on this surname for All Types with no dates - so got everything from Sep 1837 to Dec 1915 (or 1916).   Total # of items was 10.  I also did a search for them in the 1881 census just putting in the surname and got nothing!!

There are some Rickitt's and Ricket's however the spelling of the ancestor born in 1788 is Rickit, as is the spelling now.  I doubt it would have changed to something else and back between 1788 and 1900.

The ones I have found (of the 10) that I know are related were born in Louth and Holborn which are both in Lincolnshire.   I suspect the other 5 Rickit records are related but I haven't tied them in yet.   I also understand that not all BMD are transcribed yet but 10!!

Can anyone help by checking the census for me to see if any of them were in 1841 (if possible),1851, 1861, 1871, 1891 & 1901.

I would like to try to find out two things.   When they all left England and it seems they were all gone by 1881 (very strange) but maybe the census records will help to understand this.   The other things is - does any one know where else in the British Isles Rickits may have come from, ie Ireland, Wales.

Thanks
lyraea

I think you will probably find that Holborn is in the London area.

I can put a search in for all censuses and it comes up with just the one family of three people living in Cambridge, in 1861, Jane, daughter Sarah J and grandson Stephen J, all spelt Rickit.  Unfortunately with surnames a lot depends on whether the famiy were literate, whether they spelt the name for the enumerator or whether he took a guess, and also what spelling the transcriber makes of what is written, so you will always have to use variations in spelling.

I think you are trying to do a lot at once just by picking up all names like that and expecting to fit them together, and wonder how much of a tree you have got fitted together to make a start from.  Have you done a search of the 1901 census to see if there are any others just misspelt?  I would suggest that you start from who you know and work from there.

If you can give names and dates we can try and find them.

Mary

Just out of curiosity I checked for Rickitt* on the 1901 census and found 22 entries.

Allowing for the misspellings as I suggested above, a search for Ricket* produced a list of 4,598 entries.

Hi Mary

Thanks for your replies.

I am aware of the other spellings so I checked every person I am looking for under Rickitt, Ricket and Rickett and found nothing that came close to matching what I have.    I have dates for pretty much everyone and even allowing for a few years either side - found nothing (except those already mentioned below). Of course I realize as I said below that they may not be transcribed yet (in any spelling).  I already had all the info below except that they were born in Louth.

I have listed some of people below.   If you would prefer not to do this I would understand.

Williams first three children were born in Louth but not sure about the rest yet.

2. William RICKIT (c.11 Apr 1821;d.31 Jul 1891)

   3. Christopher Titus RICKIT (b.20 May 1854;d.20 Dec 1931)

It's not a question of not wanting to, I'm willing to help with any look ups I'm able to but there's a great lack of information.  Can't be sure of any of this since it's a shot in the dark not knowing even whether they were in England at the time and most of the names not showing up on censuses after the date of their birth, or they may even have moved from the area.  Having done as you and got the  list of Rickits this could be one of those.

I would suggest that you check the passenger lists etc. to see if you can discover when they emigrated and to where.

Stephen Rickit died June qtr 1856 Louth 7a 322 - no age given.

Don't forget that Louth given for BMD's is a Registration district, NOT necessarily where they lived.

The Stephen who died in 27/4/1856 is Williams father and he married Martha Ann(e) ? and this is as far back as I go so far.

I appreciate your help - thankyou.

These are the only RICKIT birth registrations in Louth up to 1861 on freeBMD

Births Jun 1845
RICKIT    Jane        Louth    14   492
Births Sep 1848
Rickit    Elizabeth Anne         Louth    14   509
Births Jun 1852
RICKIT    Joseph         Louth    7a   315 (should read 515)

There are not the same as the dates you give, so I thought perhaps you hadn't seen them.

Caroline's birthplace was given as Horncastle in 1851 census.

Hi Geoff

Thanks for your info

Yes I had seen that (only today) and haven't updated my records yet.  I hadn't caught the 515 though.   I've got a feeling that they may have come to NZ in the 1850's as there doesn't seem to be anything for the ones I know are in the family (some listed below) after the 50's.    In fact the only one I can find in FreeBMD after the 50's is a death in 1866 of Sarah Jane.

I have just managed to get back to my PC and noticed the 1851 census info from MaryA.   I have James birth at 1857 - obviously written incorrectly by the person who gave me the info.
