White Family Sussex

Hi,
  I am new to the site and I think it is great, I hope someone will be able to help me with my research, my 4th great grandfather William White was born in Sussex and he married Ann Thatcher they had 3 children that I know of William, Sarah and Ann, I am hoping to get any info on this family even parents and family of William and Ann,

Right, after saying that, Sussex is a big county and we need a bit more info where to start looking for them, their ages and an idea of their birth dates.

William White married Ann Thatcher - any idea where in Sussex or what date
They had 3 children - what are their forenames, where were they born and about what year

Hi Chris,
         Thank you for your reply, I have am told  only that William was Born in Sussex, no date of birth, no date or place of birth for Ann, they were married in All Saints Sussex on October 10 1761, their children were all born in Hastings Sussex, William in January 1762, Sarah 1765, and Ann 1767, William married a Sarah Tolhurst born in Westfield, I am told they were publicans of an inn called The Kings Head Inn at Ore from 1832 to 1834, they gave it away when William became ill and he died November 13 1837 at Ore,
Any info you can gather would be very much appreciated, from what I have read you have done wonders for other people.

Firstly, thank you Little Nell for providing that information.

By coincidence I live in Ore Village, not too far from the Kings Head Inn, so am pretty well familiar with the area.  Will take a walk up there tomorrow and take a picture of the pub.

Not far from me is the Old St Helens Church, Ore, which is now a ruin and the churchyard is overgrown.

I visited it last week in order to look at what condition it is in (see picture below) and to see if I could re - transcribe the stones and take digital pictures of them before the vandals destroy everything.

Looking through my transcription notes done in the last few days, I found the following in Old St Helens

Memorial No 36
Sacred/ to the memory of/ Sarah/ wife of William White/ who departed this life/ May 9th 1827/ aged 60 years/ also of/ William White/ who departed this life/ November 11th 1837/ age 72 years/

Now - isnt that a coincidence - will take a picture of the stone in the next few days and post it on here for you.

In the meantime, will try to see if I can find anything else out for you - fingers crossed

Been looking through the baptisms for children of William & Ann

A/S = All Saints
S/C = St Clements

Whilst I have the same names as you - I have different dates

A/S - William, 2nd Feb 1766
A/S - Sarah, 14th Jul, 1762
A/S - Ann, 8th Feb 1764

Possible children of William & Sarah taken from the Baptism Register are:
A/S - Sarah, 13th Jan 1788
S/C - Thomas, 20th Nov 1792
S/C - Joseph, 1st Mar 1795
S/C - James, 13th Mar 1796
S/C - Robert, 28th Apr, 1799
A/S - Ann, 5th Apr 1801
S/C - George, 29th Jun 1804
A/S - Thomas, 8th Oct 1806
S/C - Barbara, 17th Jul 1807

Looking at later baptisms, it would appear that Thomas, Joseph, James and Robert all married and produced children.

Chris, can I say what a beautiful church that is!  Is there no preservation society that can do something about it, or are you IT?  Such a shame, it looks very old, Norman?

Hi there Jane

The Sussex Heritage Trust has undertaken responsibility for this scheduled ancient monument and Hastings Area Archaeological Research Group (HAARG) of which I am a member are keeping a daily watch on the site.

But is still does not stop things like this happening - and if you imagine the weight of that table top tomb lid - it must be nie on impossible to do this.

Are we getting intervention from other powerful forces?

Incidentally, The favourite saint of Offa, King of Mercia, who conquered Hastings in 771 was St Helen, and it has been suggested that this may explain the dedication of this ancient parish church - so it is very very old.
