Mary Lizzie Owen of Dinas Cross
« on: Monday 30 January 06 22:48 GMT (UK) »

Hi Please can anyone help me with info on my great grandmother Mary Lizzie Owen. I know from a family bible that she was born in Sept 1870 at Yet y Bontpren, Dinas Cross and died April 1948 in Pengam, Mon. She married William Harries in Griffithstown in 1892. I know that they spent their married life in Lower Fishguard.

I have her on the 1901 census but am struggling to find any trace of her or her family before she married. There is a chance that she was illegitimate which maybe why I'm sruggling.

Thanks, Alison

Hello, shwmae - I'm a Lower Fishguard girl & am interested in doing more research on the village. I have a lot of scanned photos which might be of interest to you.  I know that mariners commonly moved up & down the coast.  There is a Captain Parry from N Wales who moved down to Cwm (L Fishguard) & raised a large family.  I'll keep my eyes peeled for Owen - Hwyl - Hedydd

If the baptism was anglican I note only 2 possibilities that could equate to the Mary you seek.
Mary Elizabeth Owen baptized at Moylgrove in 1875, the ’81 shows her with her mother aged 6yrs.
Mary Ellen Owen baptized at Newport in 1872, the ’81 shows her with her Aunt Ellen Owen aged 8.
For Mariners of Pembrokeshire you can do no better than consult Dr Reg Davies at ;
http://www.welshmariners.org.uk/
I will check out the baptism of Mary Ellen for you to see who the father was.

Whilst at the Rec Off today had a look for Mary Owen. The easist and quickest of the 2 was Newport ;
13 Dec 1872 Mary Ellen to John Lewis and Mary Elizabeth Owen of High Street a Mariner.
The orginial registers for the period of your interest at Moylgrove are not held at the Rec Off, so was unable to look for the baptism record of Mary Elizabeth Owen baptised at Moylgrove in 1875. It is possible that the B.T.'s still exist for the period at the N.L. of W.
