Yardley

I have recently been looking at the family history of George Walmsley.

I found George, aged 3 in the 1901 census, Yardley, Worcester.

I have now been told Yardley is the parish in
which SPARKHILL, Birmingham is situated. To quote the county of Worcestershire is quite misleading.

can anybody let me know if the county boundaries have moved. Is Yardley still Worcestershire?

Hi Robert  Yardley is in Birmingham now, but, a lot of the Brum districts are listed as being in Worcesestershire even in 1901. It seems to be only the inner areas that are listed under Aston. Other districts, that are in Birmingham now, were Staffordshire when my ancestors lived there. Best thing if you're doing a search, is to put the district in rather than the county & if you're not sure you can always ask on this site as there's always someone who'll help you out! The top of a census page will give you clues as well.

Yardley came under Worcestershire until1911 when it was swallowed up by Birmingham.

Includes images and some very useful stuff including some very early transcriptions.  However, you will  need to scroll a long way down the Home page to find the details.

Thanks Mike. I found out a lot about my paternal grandmother's family & where they lived on the Rowley Regis page. These local pages are excellent & the folk on them are always very helpful too.
