I'm trying to find Elizabeth Woolsey my grandmother's family name before she married my grandfather, I would be very appreciative to anybody who could help me.                                                  wagtail321

The easiest way would be to send for her marriage certificate, that would give you her maiden name.

We need a bit more information-

Assuming she became Mrs WOOLSEY, what was Mr WOOLSEY's first name?

Have you any idea which decade she was born or married ? Or how old are their children?

Assuming the events happened in Lincolnshire, which part of Lincs?

I've received this info from Wagtail

"My Granddads name was Thomas, they could be married about t the 1870, as a rough  idea, and they would have been married in Spalding.  I remember Mum saying that  Gran's surname was Cardinal, but that seems to me to be too much of a coincidence 'Cardinal Woolsey', there was a very large family of perhaps 12 to 13."

So far, I have only found one Thomas WOOLSEY, with wife Elizabeth in the 1881 census, living in Messingham.  They had 3 children, but just the same 3 in 1891, so they seem unlikely.

There was a John Thomas WOOLSEY married in Spalding in 1870 but his wife was not Elizabeth  - it was Jemima.. I will chase them up to see if they were prolific breeders.  Hmmm, they had 3 in 1881 and only one more in 1891.

Looks like a 2nd marriage for Edward.

Thomas WOOLSEY's origins are less certain as there was one born in 1871 and another in 1872 in Spalding.

Thank you Geoff, you found the right family alright, there were a few more kids born after Florrie, my mum was born 1908 her name Kathleen was probably not correct because when I registered her death in 2002, the registrar thought that my mum's name was Catherine rather than Kathleen, however, you have found out a great deal in a short time, to which I am greatfully obliged to you, if you do findout that my mum's name was other than Kathleen, would you let  me know?

In fact her birth was registered under neither of those names!

Also, note the year!    It's possible that she was registered a year late, but unlikely.
