Durkan and Kolic/Colic/Cholic? Poss. hamlet Nr.Swinford?
« on: Sunday 29 January 06 14:52 GMT (UK) »
I have an elderly friend (Surname Durkin) who's father came from an hamlet nr.Swinford in Co. Mayo.which he only  knows as Colic/Kolic/Cholic?

He said that another relative visited the area some years ago, only  to find just some derelict cottages.

I searched the 1901 Census returns link and have found some Durkans in Carroward ,Bohola. and others in Kinaffe,Kilconduffe.

Is there any kind soul who knows the area and could perhaps give me a map ref. or any other inhabited villages in the area?

Regards, Springbok

Hi,
I looked Swinford up in 1901 census at
www.leitrim-roscommon.com
and found that Swinford is in Kilconduff parish.  Then by looking at this page:
http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/mayo/kilconduff.htm
you can see the townlands in that area. Mind you- the townland you are after might be bordering this parish- whose to say.
Also your friend could apply for his father's birth certificate by searching Irish indexes at a local LDS centre or if he had the details - birthdate  and area maybe directly to the Registrar in Ireland.
Hope this helps or at least someone does!

There is a website:
http://www.mayo-ireland.ie/Mayo/Towns/SwinFd/SwinFd.htm
which seems to be out of date now for most towns - however there is a discussion board on that which mentions Durkans plus genealogoical services which are expensive and perhaps a last resort. Anyway that's enough for now- good luck to your friend.

Thankyou for the link,I think that will keep him going for a while.

Just had a quiet grin as I realized that I'd described him as elderly and my husband pointed out that the friend is  younger than I am!!  'Nuff said .

Hi Springbok,

A while since you posted the message (I have only just joined RootsChat). I was trawling the Mayo board and spotted the message you left. The hamlet your friend was thinking of wasnt Killasser was it? This is a village near Swinford where my Durkans were from.

Hi Trilobite,

Thanks for your note. I think that I was able to find a list of returns for names which seemed to ring a bell.

Unfortunatley , Neither he nor his wife have good health so he's just passed the info. on to his son. And not doing any more himself. Thanks again and welcome to Rootschat

Hi everyone
my partners family are the Durkans also from Killaser Mayo.
We visited the house where they were all brought up and it is a shell with another house now built next to the derelict 'shed' that was home.
His father was Patrick Durkan born 1917, son of Martin and Mary Cassidy both born 1875 ish. Their other children include Martin,Thomas,Michael,John (the last two moved over to Manchester Uk along with Patrick), sisters Margaret who also married a Durkan from Rubble Mayo, Eileen, Sarah (Sadie) and Mary who is a nun in Chile.
There is no other info on Martin and Mary in Killaser, the census return shows too many to know who is the correct one..
if anyone out there has any info or ideas where to go next I would be very grateful

Thanks Karen

If it is any use these are the townlands in Killaser beginning with a C.

  Callow
  Carrowbeg
  Carroweeny
  Carrowliam Beg
  Carrowliam More
  Carrowmore
  Carrowmoremoy
  Carrownageeragh
  Carrowneden
  Cartron
  Cartronmacmanus
  Cloonainra
  Clooncleevragh
  Cloonfinish
  Cloontubbrid
  Coolcashia
  Coollagah
  Corlee
  Cornageeha
  Creggaballagh
  Creggaun
  Cuildoo
  Cuillonaghtan
  Cullin

My grandfather - a Casey - came from Cloontubrid in the parish of Killasser.   He has Durkan cousins there.  In the 1901 census there were a few Durkan households in Cloontubrid.    I attach a copy of that census.

Have you tried the Mayo Family History site?   http://mayo.brsgenealogy.com

That shows only three Martin Durkans baptised in Killasser in the 1870s - none in 1875 but I have learnt never to set too much store by the accuracy of dates.   It might be worth exploring these if you have any more family clues.    There are a number of Mary Cassidys born about that time on Mayo but none in Killasser.
