Hello dmedal,

Welcome to Rootschat, here are a just a few of sites that you can search free, for birth, marriages & deaths for England.

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/  from 1837 and  up

www.familysearch.org/   the LDS site has many births deaths & marriages taken from church records - this site also includes the 1881 census free

www.ancestry.co.uk/search/  has BMD records from 1837 and up

Good luck with your search, and don't forget that you can always ask for specific lookups here on Rootschat. There are many great people that are always  willing to help where they can!

Regards

Hi Dmedal

As Pauline suggests, registration of births, marriages & deaths first got organised in 1837.  Prior to that you are looking for Parish Records (generally held in local record offices these days) or such as Pallot's Marraige Index or Boyd's Marriage Index.

Probably the best thing you can do is to post a request on the board for the county your ancestors were in at the time, so if you know that John MEDAL married in Wiltshire in 1820, try posting a request on the Wiltshire board.

Family History Societies often publish transcriptions on CD or fiche, which those with local knowledge will be able to inform you about.  Or if you are really lucky, there might be someone going to the local Record Office, who can look up the record you need.

If you are unsure of which county, post a request in the most likely county.  WAIT a while, to see whether there is any response (the person you need might be on holiday!).  Then if no joy, try another county or post on the Common Room Board.

If you have a specific query give as much detail as you possibly can, including the last census you found them on - with reference if possible.

Good luck & ask again if you need further help

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Not sure which message board to post this on so here goes.
I know that Nicholas Easton married Jane and I last found the family in Pottsville PA  in 1840-I think. Census only give numbers of family members and not names. Before that They lived in Little Mohoney Northumberland PA. Alexander Easton Later was found in Plymouth PA in 1880 with his mother Jane and Willie and Bessie. Alexander Marries Elizabeth Johns in 1897. The records in luzerne county marraiges only go up to 1885.  I found the record of the Easton/Johns marriage but it states Alexander's first wife was dead. So I know Alexander was single in 1880 and I looked though 1885 and found no record of the first marriage.  I am assuming the marriage took place in Luzerne county and his wife must have died there as well.  Not sure I'll ever know who that first wife was. I do know Alexander was methodist. But I would really like to trace Nicholas Easton back to Scotland and find out Jane's maiden name to trace her back to England.. I've looked on the web sites posted with no luck... And if this the wrong board - how do I get to the right one... Thanks

First it sounds as though you need to find out when the family left Britain.

Any records in the UK will be pre-census, so it will be important to establish where they came from quite precisely in order to look up parish records.

I know next to nothing about emigration to the US, so I suggest you post this request on the Emigrants to the US board, giving as much detail as you can, in the hope that their records show where they originated.

It could be that others will have more useful advice!!

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)
