Hi Carol

there's a marriage at Chester le Street showing on Freebmd for the Sept qtr 1888 for a John Hewison only one spouse showing an Elizabeth..

You might have to ring the Registrars at Bishop Auckland..which is where all the bmd's are now kept..

Do you know his Father's name ?? as it would help as a checking point.. if not I would try and track down the child's Birth Certificate and order it.. it would confirm both of the parents names.

There's this Birth showing on Freebmd
Births Mar 1889

Hewison  Sarah     Chester le S.  10a 484

Hope this is of some help

Hi Vicar's Wife,

I have now got the information that you wanted from the 1901 census about John Hewison. The family now live at High Hold, Pelton. John Hewison (head) is 39, Platelayer born at Pelton. Mary Hewison aged 42, wife born at Pelton, Sarah, 12 b.Pelton daughter. Margaret M Hewison daughter, age 9, born West Pelton (my relation) and Joshua G Stewart, boarder age 15, Colliery Labourer b.West Pelton. I am wondering if Joshua could be a clue and Mary may have been Mary Stewart before marriage.

You also asked about John's father's name which was Thomas and his wife was Margaret. The whole family seemed to all live in the Pelton area and didnt move far at all.

Hope this helps trace one or both marriages. I may need to order Margaret Makepeace Hewison aged 9 above, birth cert, if not. How do I get that?

I think there is a connection with the Stewart line. I have found Robert and Mary Stewart living at Handon Hold in 1881 and this is where the Hewisons lived.  Robert 23 a Grocers Assistant born in Scotland and Mary 26 born at Beamish. In 1891 they are living in Heworth Gateshead St Edmonds, together with Joshua aged 5. I have found a death of Robert Stewart in 1899 but dont know if its the right one and also a marriage of Robert Stewart and Mary Dixon in 1879 in the Durham northern area. Can you check this marriage to see if it could be right and then look for John Hewison and Mary Stewart between 1899 and 1901.

Thank you very much.

Hi Carol

I would be very tempted if I were you to order both of the Birth Cert's one for Sarah and the one for Margaret..

The Birth Certs would give you both the parents names.. which would include their maiden names.. then it might be easier to search under their names rather than Hewison.. as there could be a wide variety of spellings for Hewison.. and of course it all depends on the handwriting..

I dont know what else to suggest really..

Yours

I have now obtained the Birth Certificate for Margaret Makepeace Hewison and her mother's name is Margaret Ann Hewison formerly Scott. Can you please now try and find the Marriage of John Hewison and Margaret Scott possibly around 1888.

Thank you.
