Is anyone researching Orwins?
« on: Wednesday 25 January 06 14:08 GMT (UK) »
One of my ancestors John Orwin married and Ann Carr in Earsdon, Northumberland in 1768.  They seem to have one child Elizabeth there and then move to Sunderland where they had a number of other children, Wilson, John. Mary, and Isabella.

Now Orwin is unusual enough but Wilson Orwin is even rarer (he's my GGG grandfather and my father's first two names are Wilson Orwin too), but there seems to be another family producing Wilson Orwins up near Lanchester.

I also noticed that nicely placed between the births of the 5 children above, there are also two more children born to  John and an Ann Orwin in one in Chester-le-Street and one in Lanchester.

Is anyone else researching this family?  The unusual nature of the name Wilson Orwin persuades me there may be a link and I'd love to find it if there is.

Thanks

Jos

Hi Jos,
My GGGrandfather was Abraham Orwin, he was born around 1840 or a couple of years earlier in Usworth. I haven't been able to pin down his exact birthdate.
He married Mary Stewart sometime in the 1860s. In 1881 the family was living in Gateshead. In 1901 they were at Marley Hill, Whickham.
They are not the easiest family to trace because the surname is not always spelled the same way on census declarations etc.
As a matter of interest, the above named Abraham was incarcerated in Durham Gaol when the 1861 census was taken, I'd love to know why.

Hey Pete

Thank goodness I thought I was the only one!

I agree Orwin is difficult - I've found Orrins and Urwins as well so far!

The name is quite rare so I think the NE ones may link up.  I don't have any Abrahams yet but let's stay in touch and see if it turns out to be the same family.  The key forename in my family is Wilson.

Cheers

Jos

Hi Jos,
Ive replied this way to remind you of the original post. As I said Abraham's father was George, but I don't have any further info, except I guess he was born 1810 to 1820. Abraham's details are also difficult because his age and birthplace seems to vary on different census declarations. He was born 1837 to 1840 in either Usworth or Gateshead. Any possible links to George would be gratefully received.
                regards
                            Pete

Hi Pete

Thanks for doing that it helped a lot.

After some digging I've just found Abraham aged 2  in the 1841 census with the surname Irwin and a lot of family including his father George who was marked as born in 1796 (i.e. between 1792 and 1796) in Co Durham.

That puts George outside of the dates of my candidates but there may still be a link.

I also found Abraham in the 1861 called Urwin as a prisoner with his brother Robert in Willington Co Durham so congratulations I think you've got a black sheep (I'm still looking for mine so I'm very envious!)

I'll keep hunting round and get back to you

Cheers

Thanks again, did you happen to notice where the family was living in 1841 and George's wife's Christian name?

Hi Pete

I can't read the address but it is in Gateshead Fell.

His wife is Elizabeth who is 45-ish, kids are:
William 19
Valentine 16
George 14
Elizabeth 12
John 10
Robert 9
Jane 5
Abraham 2

Big George is a Collier

I just found the family in the 1851 spelled Urwin.  Elizabeth is now head and marked as being born in 1797 in Usworth Co. Durham.  She is a widow.

Let me know if I can check anything else for you.

Cheers
