Coroner's Inquests in Queensland
« on: Wednesday 25 January 06 13:10 GMT (UK) »
Hi Guy's,

This post http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,122689.0/topicseen.html has got my mind turning, have recently sent away for my uncle's death certificate to find some more answer's and as mentioned in the post to see if there was an inquest into his death, my uncle was three years old when killed in a truck accident, I wasn't even thinking there could have been a write up in the newspaper until now, how would I go about finding this out, he died in Toowoomba, Qld 1948, would the local newspaper still hold stories from this far back or do I have to go somewhere else to find it. Also if there was an inquest would there still be copies of the transcripts somewhere.

Thanks
Nari

Hi Nari

The local family history society in Toowoomba probably have indexes from their local newspapers, you would have to check with them.  It may have even been in the Brisbane paper which is also archived at libraries throughout the state, if you are in Queensland there may be one close by. QLD Archives hold inquests for the earlier years but not sure about the year you are after but they may know where you have to apply.

Hope this gives you some idea

Hi Nari

If there was an inquest it should be at the State Archives - unfortunately the online index only goes to 1880

Thanks for all your help guys, I will look into everything posted, the history society in Toowoomba looks great and I have to ring the state archives for something else so will ask them about the inquest.

Cheers

Probably should mention  on this thread that I found a summary of the inquest at the archives. It was held at Laidley.

I got a transcript from the QLD Archives a couple of decades ago.  I got the location and dates from the death certificate (though I've found later that this is not always the case.)  It was held at Silver Spur, near Texas, QLD.

I also checked the Courier Mail newspaper around the time and found 2 stories about the deaths.  It had been a murder suicide so the 1st story was on the day the murder happened and then on the following day.  I couldn't find the coroners findings.

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to let you know that I sent a request into the State Library for any newpaper articles on Brian's death and within a week I recieved a letter in the mail with two articles from the Laidley Herald with details of the accident and information on the inquest, although a sad story I'm so excited to now know what happened so a big thankyou to everyone for your help and the great work by the State Library who are just the best.

Cheers
