Parish Register of St Mary the Virgin, Cardiff.

Could someone help solve a long standing mystery?

My gt gt gtrandparents were married at St Mary the Virgin, Cardiff on 29 September 1856. He was William Winser CAME, she, Sarah Ann BRITTON.

Problem is the copy of the marriage certificate is barely legible. It is impossible to decipher her father's name. Many attempts to locate her family have come to nothing.  Any chance someone could look up in the PR and advise the name of the father?

HI
On Freebmd Sarah Ann Britton marriage sept 1856 vol 11a page 316.. you could send for the certificate worth the £7 pounds for the info.
St Mary's Virgin church is not on IGI unless of course someone else can see it

Hello there,

I have the certificate as my post states. Problem is that Sarah's father's name is illegible on this.

The only way to resolve the question of his name is by looking at the original entry in the PR.

Sorry AK miss understood your request.
other option have you found the church records? you could contact your local family history center they could send for the records for you  and you could then read them yourself. also have you tried contacting the reg office they might have a better view of the name.
I'm sorry I'm not much help

Hi AK

I checked for you.... it appears to read Samuel Britton.  However William Winser's last names appears to be CARNE rather than CAME, but the date and other information all matched so it has to be the correct marriage.

Regards

Caro

Hello Caro,

Thankyou very much for this.

As suggested, I contacted the RO to see if they could help. They have replied today and confirmed the father's name was Samuel BRITTON.

I have spent hours pouring over the marriage certificate with a magnifying glass! Thought they had made a mistake and written Sarah again.

The name of CAME is correct, it often gets spelt in other ways and presents a challenge!

Thanks again,

AK.
