Woon Family from Chacewater 1841
« on: Monday 20 September 04 02:42 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the family history of my ancestors. John Woon emigrated (19) from Chacewater to australia in 1857. His Father was listed as Richard. I have some information i.e. Richard married Jemima Jenkin in 1835. I have no other information on Richard. He was not listed as living with Jemima in the 1841 census or the 1851 census.
Thank you for any response.

I do not know where Chacewater is but I have a Woon in my ancestory.  A distant relative married a Joanna Woon and had many children they married on the 5th July 1815.  I am interested to know the background to the name as it seems unsually for Cornwall.  My family came from Gerrans and Veryan

Just by the way - Chacewater is 5 miles from Truro on the Truro/Redruth road, in Cornwall

Hi,
I Richard Woon appears in the IGI born on the 8th November 1800 - Christened on the 7th December the same year in Truro (close enough to Chacewater)
and a John Woon appears on the free bmd born in Truro in the March Quarter of 1842. (Dist: Truro Vol. 9 Page 353). I know this makes him a little younger than 19 when he emigrated, but perhaps it was a slip in dates.
Good luck,
Regards,
Valan

Hi
Have you looked at Genuki website they have a great deal of information on the parishes.  Did you know anything about the name?  If I find out anything else on the Woon's I will let you know

John Woon, age 19 years came to Australia on the ship BURLINGTON, departing Plymouth on the 28th October 1856 and arriving at Port Adelaide on February 13th, 1857.
My records show John was born in Kenwyn. I also have this information.

Kenwyn Church
26-03-1835
Richard Woon to Jemima Jenkin
Witnesses T G Hicks &  Jno Hall
Vicar George Cornish

Have a feeling that the Truro born John Woon may be from a different Family.
Cheers.  Ian Woon (South Australia).  MODERATOR COMMENT:email address removed to avoid spam. Please use personal message system to share email addresses. Thank You

Just poking my nose in...

Saw the thread title and remembered I'd just posted this info for another query last night..

"On The IGI listings there is a marriage of Robert Sawle and Maria Noon
28 JUL 1838      Saint Gerrans, Cornwall, England

Also a baptism of William Sawle 26 DEC 1842       Breage, Cornwall - parents Robert Sawle and Maria

The Civil Reg Index has a Sept Quarter Truro District 1838 marriage for Robert Sawle, also on page is Maria Woon (mistranscribed maybe?)"

Perhaps I've got it wrong and it's the Noon that's mistranscribed and Woon is correct :)
