Inquest on death in Leamington Spa - Griffin.
« on: Tuesday 24 January 06 17:05 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

Perhaps somebody could help me.   An ancestor of my Husband - Edward Griffin or Edward James Griffin was born in 1852.   I have been looking for his death for ages.   All I know is that his last address was Shrubland St. Leamington.   He was found dead in a canal or river at pensionable age, he was a drinker.   I assume that there would have been an inquest.   I've been over the BMD index numerous times but can't find his death.

If he had been found dead in another part of Warwickshire would his death have been registered there or where he lived?   I found a death at Alverstoke but the age was 4 yrs. out.   Does anybody know if I could trace him somehow through the inquest.

Any ideas would be helpful.

Thank you.

Marie.

Hi Marie,

You haven't said when you think Edward may have died.  When you say "pensionable age", I assume you mean 60+ which implies he died in the 1910s or 1920s.  Correct?

Don't be misled by the age shown in a death cert (or listed on the index).  Normally the age is accurate or about right, but it can sometimes be hopelessly wrong - particularly if the informant didn't know the deceased and had to guess.  In this case, the informant would have been the coroner (if there was an inquest) so you may have found the correct one anyway!

Coroners reports are rather hard to get hold of.  If memory serves, these were essentially private documents and there was no legal requirement to have them archived. (I stand to be corrected.)

Given the circumstances you describe, it's possible that the death/inquest was reported in a local newspaper.  Perhaps someone could provide you with some guidance about that.

Hope this helps
Dave

Hi

I know Leamington Spa - as it is now called, Shrubland Street is very near to the canal.

If he drowned in the canal in Leamington then his death would have to be registered in Warwick district - your death has to be registered in the district where you died not where you lived e.g. if you where visiting relatives in London and died - that is where your death will be registered.

HI

Warwick Archives have some newspapers from that time, it may well be worth doing a search of them about the time you think he died, for an inquest report.

Have you tried searching the name on the A2A site?
