Barnsley Cemetery
« on: Friday 20 January 06 15:41 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I wonder if anyone has anyone knowledge of Barnsley Cemetery and its history.

I have noticed on a lot of old photographs that there were two chapels located inside the cemetery, roughly where a set of 'ruins' currently stand. I had always assumed that these ruins were fake - a piece of the landscaping by the designers. I know the chapels were there in 1910 as I have seen a photograph of the funeral of the children killed in the Public Hall disaster and they can be seen in the background.

Can anyone tell me the fate of these buildings? Are the 'ruins' (or part of them) the actual remains of the chapels?

Also, does anybody know if there is a 'Friends of Barnsley Cemetery' group or similar? I was quite dismayed to see that one of the buildings attached to the front wall was in a very poor state of repair with most of the back roof missing. Also, while the cemetery itself is in good order, many of the older graves are in a poor state too, possibly due to vandalism that hasn't been put right.

Any responses are appreciated!

Just a quick update the buildings at the gate of the cemetery have been refurbished and turned into three flats one of which was advertised in the Barnsley chronical a few weeks ago ( they do look much better ) No doubt someone will enjoy living there,

Hi

Just to let people know there is now a friends group for Barnsley Cemetery, we are having our first open day this Sunday 17th August, 10.30 - 3.30.

We will be having guided walks of the war graves one at 11am and one at 2.30 these are by ticket only available on the day.

We will have a database available which covers from 1861 when the cemetery opened until 1960. We also have a large number of MI's which at present can only be searched by plot number.

The lodge house is now fully occupied and looks very nice they have been done to a extremely high standard and are beautiful inside. The roof of the roundhouse will hopefully be repaired by the end of the year.
The group will be leasing from the council the roundhouse and the workmans hut to use as a base for further activities.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any further questions. For now please use my hotmail e mail  *

Hi Doodle

Do you have a copy of the whole thing including the unconsecrated  sections. Our database includes both sections from 1861 - 1960 so far.

Hello Doodle, I'm not sure if you can find any of my family, I am looking for Patrick Carroll and his wife Elizabeth. Patrick died in1873 and Elizabeth died  sometime around 1903 I think.  Much appreciated.
