Barnsley Cemetery

Hi carolanne,

Hubert Needham who drowned in the canal turns out to be Herbert Needham my grandmother's brother!
He was living in Brinckman St. as a lodger according to the 1901 census shortly before he died.
I will contact Barnsley Library Archive to see if there was a report in the Chronicle.

I haven't been able to connect Elizabeth Needham (who died aged 6) to Frank Needham even though they both lived in the same street in 1881.

Many thanks for the info on the headstones and cemetery sections.

Frank Needham was originally from Sheffield and moved to Barnsley in the mid 1850's when his father, John became a foreman iron moulder in a foundry in Summer Lane.  John went on to become a co. founder of Needham Qualter Hall in 1870.  John died in 1875 and Needham Bros. & Brown was formed by his sons with the money they received from the sale of their father's shares in NQH.

Strangely, Frank lived at consecutive addresses in Middlesex St. in consecutive censuses!  Number's 10, 12, & 14 in '81, '91 & '01.
He was living in Agnes Terrace, Day St. Barnsley at the time of his death.  His parents and eldest brother are in section P in Barnsley cemetery.

I can't find Elizabeth Needham in the 1881 census infact I can't see 4 Middlesex Street so I might have to go to Specsavers.
I've been to the cemetery today I've looked in section R and I couldn't find a near enough grave number to work out where plot 268 would be. Section H is large and has loads of grave stones but even there trying to work out the numbers is like trying to do a jigsaw blind foldered anyhow I found number 179 but then the path curves and the graves nearest to the path are in the 200's so we carried on to where the path curves again and there were some 190's so I've been in the right area but can't find 184 theres either no marker or its the grave stone that has fallen face down.
If you contact the main office at the Crem they used to do print outs of all the graves in the section and mark the one your after with a X marks the spot.Once we know exactly where it is I'll go back for another look.

Not sure if Ardsley comes under Barnsley cemetery, but am looking for Bernard and Mary Riley/Reilly last known adds in 1861 nbr 50 Watson Fold (I think) Ardsley.  Beranrd died in 1868 and Mary in 1869, they were both Irish so could have been RC..not sure maybe you can point me in the right direction.

I haven't got those burials in my list sorry, they may have been buried in the church yard at Ardsley and those records I imagine will be at the main library on Shambles Street.

Hello Carolanne:

I was wondering if you could tell me where I could inquire in Barnsley as to where my great grandmother is buried?

She died in 1959 I have her original death certificate.  But can not find her on any burial records so far.  I know for sure she is not buried with her husband in Doncaster. I am going to be in Barnsley this summer and hoping to do some research while there.

Thank you for the kind offer,  Here name is Ruth Hotchkiss who died in 1959 she was living at 44 Cherry's Road Cundy Cross, Barnsley at the death of her death. her age was 85 years old.
