Carolanne, you are right as the 1861 census says Silkstone, Township of Barnsley so I took this to be Silkstone as I don't know the area. Are you saying Winn Street is actually in Barnsley?
I have just checked on multimap and it seems as though Winn Street no longer exists.

Hiya Shelley
I went back a few pages in the census till I found another address that mentioned Doncaster Road so thats why I'm presuming it was a street off Doncaster Road so thats something else to ask about at the library.

Silkstone, although now a small village compared to Barnsley,

was the main Parish. This of course is a mainly ecclesiastical

matter and dates back to probably Anglo-Saxon times. When

the Normans came, much  of the land was given to various

Barons etc. as a reward. Although the Saxon lord at Silkstone

retained a lot of his land ,presumably, as long as he paid homage and service

to the Norman overlords. So the old records will refer to people being in the

Parish of Silkstone which included Barnsley,Dodworth,Cumberworth,Cawthorne,

Hoyland Swaine, Stainborough, West Bretton and many other places.

As a matter of interest, I saw recently that William the Conqueror kept 50%

of Britain for himself, 25% he gave to the church and 25% he gave to his cronies.

To get back to the original question, Winn st. would be in Barnsley and would

therefore come under the Parish of Silkstone.

 Hi Holmemoss,

Winn st. seems to be off Park road and not Doncaster road.

Click on this link. Hover your cursor over the photo's for a description.

This was Winn street before demolition.

 sorry Holmemoss,

                            That link doesn't work.

Try this and when you get to the search page, type in Winn St

Press search and the pics should appear.

  Tomkin.

Hi
I'm new to this forum so excuse my green-ness  :-[ ;)

I visited Barnsley Cemetery today to have a walk around to see if I could find any of my ancestor's burial plots.

But, the cemetery is so huge that I only managed to find one gravestone for George William Acklam who died 18 Sep 1957 and was buried 21 Sep 1957 - plot number 15 12 Con

I am particularly interested in finding the plots for Arthur Acklam and Adelaide Acklam (nee Beaumont) (Husband and Wife)
Arthur died 9 Feb 1945 and Adelaide died 20 Feb 1987

But, if a general search for any other burials of other Acklam family members is possible, I would be very interested to know the associated plot numbers for anyone found.

Note, thanks to carolanne's post #94 I have already made note of the seven names listed in that post

Any help would be much appreciated
    Bryan
