The buildings of the cemetery were as follows.
The range of buildings near to the gate were the Cemetery Keepers house now converted into flats, what we call the roundhouse which was the mortuary chapel, the workmans hut which is a modern edition.  The whole range was covered in and at present their purposes were unknown.

As you walk through the main gate you were faced with a chapel on either side to your left was the non conformists (methodists, catholics etc commonly called the unconsecrated section due to it not being blessed by a church of england vicar)chapel and to the right the C of E chapel the archways in the middle were built as such and have not changed. Unfortunately the chaples were just about demolished with only small bits of them remaining these too were under threat but after opposition from out group this plan thankfully has been dropped although I have no doubt it will reappear at some point as they will be very expensive to maintain and repair.  I hopefully have attached a couple of pictures so you can see what I mean.

Wow that seemed to work ok hope they aren't too big.

Just to add that although there is some vandalism a lot of the damage is caused by subsidence which in an area like ours is inevitable.

We are currently working on the monumental inscriptions which as you can imagine is quite a daunting task but we are progressing well.
Due to the hard work of Pete Shields from the Dearne Friends Group we now have a database of all the war graves and all the mining related deaths.

Our next projects will working on a DVD and book about the Public Hall Disaster in which 16 children were killed in order to raise funds to repair some of their stones,  and making some sort of memorial/remembrance to the men and boys who were killed in the 2 Oaks Colliery Disasters the second of which killed 326 males making it the second largest disaster in the United Kingdom

Sorry to butt in on this thread but is it too much to ask for someone to look for Bakel, Buckle and Worrall in the Burial Register?  Would you need christian names and possible dates?

Thank you so much Carolanne.  Great info - lots to think about.  We knew that part of the Buckle family became Bakel's.  Obviously the Buckle's moved into 71 Church Street after Robert Bakel died.
Very much appreciated.

Carolanne, thank you so much for that, apart from the fact you have saved me so much work in hunting for these graves it was such a thrill to get your reply so quickly. Once again thank you so much. Anita
