PHILLIPS EARWICKER family Portsea, Yours? Some Research done
« on: Friday 20 January 06 14:58 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for a Robert Phillips born abt. 1819 to 1820 born Hants. England, Found with a Shepard family in 1851 Loch Arkaig, a visitor to a shepard family (Angus) aged 30 years a shoemaker, who eventually married in Fort William in 1856. His father was also a Robert Phillips listed on his sons marriage cert. as a ships carpenter, Mother, Elizabeth Negus.

When we found this Phillips family in the 1851 census, without a son Robert listed, I was not to worried, and thought we had the right family, as the son Robert was in Scotland 1851 as you know.

Then a colleague from here (Rootschat) very kindly looked up, and sent me a copy of the 1814-1841 Baptismal Index, which listed a Robert Phillips born 1819 to this family, which re-inforced my hunch that this was the right family! however, unfortunatley I seem to be wrong, this Robert I have highlighted below, seems to have stayed in Hampshire, after looking at later census records, and I am unable to slot my Robert into this family anywhere, unless somthing is starring me right in the face, and I am just not seeing it?

So here it is, a Phillips family in Portsea,
with a little research already done, for anyone that is looking for
Phillips in Portsea. Many thanks to people in the chatroom that have tried to help,
and my friend in Hants.

Incidentally, I have all the census listed above and an entry in the Old Parish Registry for Robert Phillips born Voller Street, Portsea. 1819 should anyone require them, and willing to send them on.

Note the dates in the Baptismal Index 1813 - 1841:
Robert       11th. July         1819?
Sarah Jane 31st. December 1819?  Is this possible I wonder.

Sarah Jane was baptised in 1820, rather than 1819.

There is another Robert Phillips baptised in the Portsmouth area who might fit the bill:

Robert Phillips baptised 16 Jul 1820 (born April 1816) in Alverstoke, son of Fysher & Elizabeth Phillips.  There was a brother Fysher baptised the same day.  Alverstoke is the other side of Portsmouth Harbour but many families moved between one parish and the other.

Hello Nell,

Thank-you for your reply, I looked through the 1841 census for Alverstoke, and could find no sign of Robert Phillips, son of Fysher & Elizabeth Phillips. I wonder if they moved, this family must be worth investigating.

I thought Robert Phillips abt. 1820 father listed as a Ships carpenter at his marriage entry in 1856, and a shipwright at his death entry in 1882, would be a big clue, but it doesnt appear to help at all.

I wonder how many towns in Hampshire could accommodate a ships carpenter or shipwright?

At that time. there were a number of parishes where you would find ship's carpenters/shipwrights:  Portsea, Alverstoke, Gosport, Portsmouth.  Portsea sub-divided into many parishes as the population grew.  Since one of the largest naval dockyards in the country was to be found in Portsea (and was the whole reason for its existence), it is more a question of how many shipwrights/ship's carpenters could these parishes hold.  The answer is hundreds!

Hi Oran

Are you positive that your man was born in Hants. I gather this information came from the 1851 Census in Scotland, but at this time he was living without his family - and I wondered if perhaps he was born elsewhere and they moved when he was a child - so he thought this was his birthplace. I think you have said his mother was Elizabeth Negus - have you found this marriage?

There are only 14 Robert Phillips born 1780-1790 on the 1851 (Then, of course Robert Snr  could have died by this date).

One is a private pensioner, widowed living in the Greenwich Hospital with 100s of others - was this the "Sailor's hospital" at Greenwich? He says he was born at Exeter in Devon.  A couple are bootmakers.

Apologies if you have already been down this path.

Hello Trish,

Thank-you for your reply, and I very much welcome your post, and am open to any suggestions that might lead to the family home of the Phillips.

we can only go by the information we have accumulated from various entries, which I have listed below. From the information we have, we can only assume that Robert Phillips junior b. abt. 1820 was born Hampshire, England. However, it could be possible he was mistaken, or that he was born in Hampshire, and the family moved to another town or parish, maybe the father, also Robert Phillips work took the family to another town, or even abroad?

we have not managed to find the marriage of the parents father Robert Phillips, mother Elizabeth Negus to date, the parents names, and occupation (Ships Carpenter) were obtained from Robert Phillips junior's marriage certificate in 1856 Fort William, Scotland. It might be worth mentioning that, his parents were not listed as deceased on Robert Juniors marriage cert. 1856.
There might only be an OPR entry for the marriage, and possibly no marraige certificate available due to the time period, and a OPR entry very difficult to find, without locating a town for the family.

1851 Census entry find, staying with a Shepard Family in remote area of Loch Arkaig, listed as shoemaker, born Hants, England. I am intrigued why Robert Phillips is found here, and find myself asking lots of questions. I wonder why he is found here, how he got here, how did he know this family, is the wife a relative, are the Phillips listed Hampshire originally from Scotland or Wales, hopefully time will tell?

In 1882 Robert Phillips died, and his occupation is listed as, night watchman of a shipyard, and his father also Robert, by now deceased, is now listed as a shipwright.

This is all the information I have for Robert Phillips the son to date, and the headway is slow. I did read on a pirates website, that some Ships carpenters were resident onboard wooden hulled ships to maintain and repair any leaks, not that I am indicating Robert Phillips senior was a pirate, but maybe a mariner?

I was really hoping to simply find an entry for the parents, Robert Phillips and Elizabeth Negus, but it's proving far more difficult, so any suggestions welcome.

« Reply #8 on: Sunday 21 August 11 16:47 BST (UK) »
I Picked up on your chat about a year ago and put it aside as I found it confusing, However I have looked and my tree again and still confused.

I am approaching it from a different angle - My 3rd Great Grandfather was Fysher Phillips Negus born 25 May 1820 in Alverstoke Hampshire - I haven't been able to trace birth certificate or baptismal records for him but this date has been verified. He went on to become an eminent Naval Surgeon and ended up as  the Deputy Inspector General of Hospitals and Fleets and died in 1879 in Southsea.

His parents were Fysher Colman Negus [ A "Gentleman"1785 - 1835[ died Gosport Hants] and Elizabeth Phillips

The will of Fysher Colman Negus describes Fysher Phillips Negus as my natural child by the said Elizabeth Phillips. I am not aware of any other children by this couple or on their own.  At the time of writing his will also mentions a Mrs Amelia Phillips who was living with him at the time.

Has any of your subsequent research thrown any more light on the matter. The baptismal dates mentioned by "Little Nell" of 16 July 1820 would seem feasible for my Fysher.

Can anyone throw any more light on this

Many Thanks

Paul R Button

PS by Coincidence Fysher Phillips Negus was stationed in Malta from 1866 to 1870 with his family and had a daughter born out there and also unfortunately one of his sons died there
