Does NZ have census details that are available to genealogists?
When was the first NZ Census??

"Aye, there's the rub", to quote Shakespeare.

In short, there's no such beastie, as NZ Governments have never seen fit to publish Census records in the way the UK has done.

However, there are other ways. As an example, NZ school Admission-Discharge-Withdrawal registers have been described as a census in their own right, but are harder to find.

The NZSG have complied lists of cemetery fiche by area (no national index available as far as I know), and while not complete it's very useful.

Trade directories are handy too, but often lag behind an individuals' movements.

NZ Genealogy Society has put out a disk of the NZ Electoral Roll of 1893. This was when women gained the vote for the first time. It may be usefull

1881 freeholders list.

NZ schools admissions  (range from 1880 to 1950) not many schools are covered.
 
Trade directories

Postal directories

Electoral rolls

Cemeteries

BMD indexes

All except the school rolls should be available at any major libraries.  and some at LDS centres.
