Where is Thornahonk?
« on: Thursday 19 January 06 19:46 GMT (UK) »
Hello! I'm new to the board- so bear with me if I'm in the wrong bit. I'm on the trail of my great grandfather, who was a McKinlay (poss also spelt McKinley??), who, according to the 1901 English census when he was in Hampshire, listed his birthplace as Thornahonk, Scotland. According to Google, there isnt such a place. Can anyone shed any light for me?
Many thanks indeed.

Could it have been THORNLIEBANK which is now a suburb of Glasgow (south west side) but was once part of Renfrewshire ?

The primary site for scottish records is Scotlands People at
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/index.aspx
which is a pay site ... £6 for 30 credits - 1 credit to view the results of a search 5 credits to view each image.

What was his full name and when did he leave Scotland ?

His name was John Mckinlay (though its spelt Mckinley on the 1901 England census) and apart from knowing he was born c 1878 in Thornlebank, thats all I've got- will that be enough to search on if I get some credits, or am I on 'needle in a haystack' territory?

There are 38 John McKinlays listed as born between 1876 and 1879 ... 7 of them in Renfrewshire.

There is a 3 yr old John D McKinlay listed in the 1881 census born in Eastwood who could be a possible.

You have a PM sent.

I'm a Thornliebank boy too! The village was built to house the workers from the Thornliebank Printfields (fits the profile of the father's occupation).
