BRIDGLAND - Cranbrook
« on: Wednesday 18 January 06 04:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am looking for any help on my BRIDGLAND line.  What I have so far is:

BRIDGLAND Samuel
Birth :  estimated 1821-27 in Cranbrook
Death :  before 1871, poss 1866

Father ?:  BRIDGLAND Samuel (est b 1795)
Spouse:  ? Martha (est b 1828)
Children :   BRIDGLAND Phoebe (est b 1850 - est d 1883-1887 )
BRIDGLAND Harriett (est b 1859)

Census :  1851 in Lambeth, Surrey
Samuel Bridgland, Head, Mar, 24, Coal Porter, Cranbrook Kent
Marth, Wife, 25, Cranbrook Kent
Pheby, Dau, 1, Lambeth Surrey
Samuel, Widower, 56, Cranbrook Kent

Census :  1861 in Christchurch , Surrey
Samuel Bridgeland, Head, Mar, 40, Coal porter, Kent Cranbrook
Martha, Wife, 30, Charwoman, Kent Cranbrook
Pheobe, Daur, 11, Scholar, Surrey Christchurch
Harriett, Daur, 3, Surrey Christchurch

My line comes off Phoebe who married Richard Green in 1870.

I can't find a birth entry for Phoebe or Harriet on FreeBMD nor can I find a marriage for Samuel to Martha, so I haven't been able to find Martha's maiden name.

I am assuming Samuel, Widower in 1851 is Samuel, Head's father (but "widower" is in relationship column so no relationship is given).  Having made that assumption I tried IGI and got the following patron submitted entries:

SAMUEL BRIDGLAND
Christened:  10 AUG 1828, Cranbrook, Kent, England
Father:  SAMUEL BRIDGLAND
Mother:  PHOEBE CHAPMAN

Samuel Bridgland
Phobe Chapman
Married:  13 MAY 1813, Cranbrook, Kent, England
(plus another "Abt 1813" patron submitted entry)

This seems promising given the mother's name.  I was wondering if anyone has access to Cranbrook parish registers to check if these events actually happened.

Also if anyone has suggestions about alternative sources to try, keeping in mind I am in Canberra, Australia, I would be most grateful.

Thanks,
Ruth

There is a Samuel BRIDGELAND baptised Staplehurst 21 Feb 1796 s/o Richard and Sarah.

Brilliant site for tracing Staplehurst ancestors.

There is this entry in the 1841 census ..................

Samuel BRIDGLAND 40 ag lab b.Kent
Sameul BRIDGLAND 14 ag lab b.Kent

living at Alfred Place, Greenwich, Kent in 1841 - sharing a dwelling with a David HITCHCOCK and family HO107/489/2 folio 40 page 25

..................... a Samuel BRIDGLAND married in Greenwich district 1847 with one of the 4 possible spouses an Anna Martha MEREDITH ............... worth thinking about perhaps ???

Have you viewed the full BMD indexe images now available at http://www.ancestry.co.uk for the births of Phoebe and Harriett ???

Hi Casalguidi,

Thanks for looking for the 1841 census entry for me.  I think that's very likely to be my Samuels.  Am a bit sad that his mother wasn't in there, but... oh well.

I got excited when I saw that Anna Martha Meredith marriage a couple of months ago, especially when I looked up Anna Meredith marrying Samuel in 1847 on the IGI.  Unfortunately the record shows she married SAMUEL SOUTTER, 16 SEP 1847, Saint Paul, Deptford, Kent, England.  So close, and yet not my people.  The Samuel Bridgland from that quarter married Mary Fage or Reynolds

I have looked at the microfiche of BRI* births from about 1845-1860 and no entries for Phoebe or Harriet.  It wasn't a legal requirement to register marriages and births until 1870 or thereabouts so perhaps they just didn't.  I suppose I need to investigte parish records to go any further but genealogy has taken a back seat to other things at the moment so that will have to wait.

Now that the 1841 census is online though, I can see myself having a few days of obsessive Ancestry.co.uk activity.

Thanks again,
Ruth
