Hi,
I am looking for any help on my BRIDGLAND line. What I have so far is:
BRIDGLAND Samuel
Birth : estimated 1821-27 in Cranbrook
Death : before 1871, poss 1866
Father ?: BRIDGLAND Samuel (est b 1795)
Spouse: ? Martha (est b 1828)
Children : BRIDGLAND Phoebe (est b 1850 - est d 1883-1887 )
BRIDGLAND Harriett (est b 1859)
Census : 1851 in Lambeth, Surrey
Samuel Bridgland, Head, Mar, 24, Coal Porter, Cranbrook Kent
Marth, Wife, 25, Cranbrook Kent
Pheby, Dau, 1, Lambeth Surrey
Samuel, Widower, 56, Cranbrook Kent
Census : 1861 in Christchurch , Surrey
Samuel Bridgeland, Head, Mar, 40, Coal porter, Kent Cranbrook
Martha, Wife, 30, Charwoman, Kent Cranbrook
Pheobe, Daur, 11, Scholar, Surrey Christchurch
Harriett, Daur, 3, Surrey Christchurch
My line comes off Phoebe who married Richard Green in 1870.
I can't find a birth entry for Phoebe or Harriet on FreeBMD nor can I find a marriage for Samuel to Martha, so I haven't been able to find Martha's maiden name.
I am assuming Samuel, Widower in 1851 is Samuel, Head's father (but "widower" is in relationship column so no relationship is given). Having made that assumption I tried IGI and got the following patron submitted entries:
SAMUEL BRIDGLAND
Christened: 10 AUG 1828, Cranbrook, Kent, England
Father: SAMUEL BRIDGLAND
Mother: PHOEBE CHAPMAN
Samuel Bridgland
Phobe Chapman
Married: 13 MAY 1813, Cranbrook, Kent, England
(plus another "Abt 1813" patron submitted entry)
This seems promising given the mother's name. I was wondering if anyone has access to Cranbrook parish registers to check if these events actually happened.
Also if anyone has suggestions about alternative sources to try, keeping in mind I am in Canberra, Australia, I would be most grateful.
Thanks,
Ruth
