Co. Down
« on: Wednesday 18 January 06 03:25 GMT (UK) »
Hello All

This is my fist post here on Rootschat and I'm hoping someone might be able to assist me further in my research.

My gggg grand parents were Hans Dixon and Elizabeth Airdire.  Elizabeth's parents were Adam Airdrie and Letitia McCrae and I'm unsure of who Han's parents were, but I'm very eager to try and find out.

Hans Dixon was b. abt 1806 in Ireland, d. 8 Nov 1866 in Scotland
Elizabeth b. abt 1812 in Ireland

Children of Hans and Elizabeth:

John b. abt. 1830 d. 06 Feb 1870 Kilbirnie, Aye, Scotland
Letitia b. abt. 1834
Hugh b. abt 1837 d. 22 Dec. 1914, Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland
David b. abt 1838
William b. abt 1847
Thomas b. abt 1850
HANS b. abt 1855
Adam b. abt 1857

According to the birth certificate of Hans Dixon b. 1855 in Scotland it lists his father, Hugh Dixon's birth as County Down, Ireland....Where in Co. Down is anyone's guess?  Being new to this part of my research, I certainly would appreciate any suggestions as to where I should start searching next???

Best Regards
Lexi

Lexi,

You could try www.ancestryireland.com I had a look for you and there are 2
Hugh Dixon born before 1841 but doesn't give date. If you want to view it, it cost £6. It's not cheap. good luck.

Hei Lexi,

Here are some Co. Down Dixons. I found a Davie Dixon in Ballynahinch, Co. Down but think he was in recent times. www.knowhere.co.uk/4231_heroes.html Broken link
Some more Dixons, this time during the years 1863-4 (Griffiths Valuation of Co. Down.  http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php

Gjil, Pat and Christopher

Greatly appreciate your replies.

gjil    Someone I have contact with belongs to the Ulster Foundation, I'll ask  them to do a look up.  Whatever the cost it's cheaper then plane fare... ;D

Pat   I've set my Dixon research to one side for a while now. so I'm a little rusty.  I do believe I've seen this list, but will re-check my records.  Thanks

Christopher   see above, but I have reviewed the Griffiths Valuation, buts  its been awhile, so I'll revisit the site just to make sure I've not missed a clue or two :o

Thanks a bunch
Lexi

Hei Lexi,

This is the Co. Down board so the subject heading Co. Down seems pointless. Try doing a "search rootschat" for Co. Down - 7 pages whilst a search for Co Down gives 117 pages. http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?action=searchsearch Here are a couple of sites giving the origin of the surname Dixon - www.thenortheast.fsnet.co.uk/Surnames%20of%20North%20East%20England.htm  www.the-dicksons.org/name/name_index.htm

The Familysearch site shows a Hans Dixon born in Ireland and a couple of Hans Dicksons from Killyleagh, Co. Down. Do not worry too much about the difference in spelling. I feel it could be worth while having a look at the Dicksons of Killyleagh. http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=ancestorsearchresults.asp

I also looked at the 1912 Ulster Covenant. Several Co. Down Dixons appear on this document.  http://www.proni.gov.uk/ulstercovenantsearch

The Christian names of the children, other than Adam and Letitia who appear to be named after Elizabeth's parents, may provide a clue to either Hans' father or his grandfather as indeed Hans' own name may provide a clue. Did all the children have one name?

By the way "Aye" in Scotland? I assume you mean AYR.

All the Best, Chris

Hello Christopher,

You Said:

OK sorry it was my first posting here.   ;D

Yes, it was a type "O" I meant to say Ayr and not Aye.

Thank you for your suggestions and I did go back and look for any hidden clues and guess what...Yup, you were correct sending me there to check again.

On the death cert of the above mentioned Hugh Dixon's son.  Which would be my ggg gf "Hugh Dixon", his father's name is listed as "John Hans Dixon"

The hour is late and I need some time to try and sort this all out...

Take Care
Lexi

Hello

I've re-visited the IGI and found  Hans Dickson b. abt 1727, which I've seen before and have always wondered if he maybe related...Well I'm going to write to the 1st Presbyterian Killyleagh
19 Coiley Hill Road, Killyleagh, Tel 02844 828246
2nd Presbyterian Killyleagh
Seaside Road, Killyleagh, Tel 02844 828167

So I would appreciate your comments in regards to wether or not I should send a donation to the church along with my request or should I wait until they respond to my request...

Kind Regards
Lexi

Hello Lexi,

Churches always appreciate small donations. I would suggest sending with your request. If they are a little bit slow replying then you are in a good position to drop a gentle reminder.

Best Wishes, Chris
