Mary b. about 1843 County Clare.
married William Stewart Dickson 1862 in Victoria Australia. Died in New Zealand

Hello Rainy,

Three items are required when searching for Irish ancestors.

1. Denomination.
2. Parish.
3. Townland.

You'll have to rely on Church records as Mary was born prior to the introduction of Civil Registration in Ireland. This happened in 1864. Marriages of Non Catholic were registered from 1845 onwards. Have a look at the thread headed "Advice on how to find your ancestor's home" on the Ireland general board.

I think denomination was Roman Catholic,  But Parish and Townland I do not know.
There was Scarriff on their marriage  licence.
But I don't know whether that is a parish or townland.
When we live so far away and don't understand Parish and Townlands, as well as Counties, takes a little while to work it all out.  But will get there.

I am also looking for O'Farrell from around that time in Scarriff (Patrick m Mary Morrissey). There were not many O'Farrells in Clare so it is possible they are connected even though I did not come across your ancestor. Happy to exchange information.

My only info re Mary is the marriage certificate in Victoria Australia in 1862.

Perhaps I need to buy her death certificate in New Zealand.

Interesting you say not many O'Farrell's around at that time.

Don't forget your Mary may be recorded under Farrell. I found it can be a bit hit and miss with the O, either when transcribing records or another family with the O surname was in the area. This practice seems to have extended to arrival in Australia at least in my family's case.

This is not your Mary but FamilySearch Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958, records death in Scarriff 1916 of a Mary Farrell born 1843.

If you get around to chasing parish records, Scarriff or Scariff, is a town in the parish of Tomgraney, barony of Upper Tulla, co. Clare, Munster, Ireland. But to confuse things, I read somewhere that it was the main registration centre for the south-east quadrant of Clare. I found using Tomgraney helpful.

Also the LDS film note adds the Catholic parish of Scariff and Moynoe contains the civil parish of Moynoe and part of the civil parish of Tomgraney.

Haven't heard of Tomgraney before.

We certainly have to read and take in what we can from the Irish sites we are on.

Mary's father was Daniel O'Farrell - Farmer.  Mother Bridget O'Farrell and think it says nee O'Farrell.

Daniel would be of right age to possibly be a brother to Patrick O'Farrell however I have not sussed out that generation as yet. He had a daughter Bridget born in Ireland about 1851 according to her Australian marriage record.

Interestingly it is her three youngest siblings that were born in Ireland, each with the surname Farrell. I am confident this is correct as the father/mother combination matches, year of birth matches, Australian electoral roll names are consistent and it fits into the two year sequence between kids.

The story I am told is that the name changed to O'Farrell in Australia when two Jim Farrells began feuding. The name change explains why no matching records found for O'Farrell in Ireland but have done for his wife, Mary Morrissey.

And yes, I am probably in your time zone but also not unknown to stay up late on occasion;)

Okay that adds a little more to check out again.

Mary and William came to New Zealand very soon after their marriage at Beechworth Catholic Church.  As on their eldest daughters headstone says where she was born.

Just looked again at wedding info.
Seems they lived at Morses Creek before their marriage.
William would have been chasing the gold I would think.
So is Morses Creek a gold mine area.??

Also one of the witness's was a Michael O'Farrell.

Yes we can all burn the midnight oil when busy on research.

This is my husbands g.grandparents.

Another small piece of info, the lady witness was Annie Carrington (I think that is correct).

Be interesting to see if this now helps us find some more info, also more will have become available (I hope ) since I last looked.
