sorry to hyjack your thread, but i'm looking for info on who worked in the 'asylums' at the 1901 census, i've a relative i know was working in an asylum in hull that year, probably just as a domestic, but can't find her anywhere on a census and can't seem to find census for asylum. (thinking she migh thave lived in) Any idea where i should start?
for your search Weaverthorpe near Sledmere was a wholey private asylum, it received only private patients and there's a few families in the local area that seem to have members in & out all their lives. If you have a look at weaverthorpes notices of discharges, it's often the same person over and over, with them staying only a month or so at a time.
southcoates on the otherhand, was a licensed house, that took private & paupers. Averaging only 6 patients it's called sumercoates in the 1844 Report.
try the malton messenger archives for more info covering the asylum (one record of a death "On Monday, the 16th ult., at the Pauper Lunatic Asylum, York, Mr Geo.BROOMFIELD, printer, late of Stokesley") gives and idea what you might find
sorry i can't be more help
