Also Rembrandt Studio. 53 Donegall Place Belfast and 63 Pitt St., Newry and Bango. Down. Also one with Copied Cabinet on it but no address, only a little icon of a crown and lions.

Hello Robin,

Most places in the Belfast area are closed for the next couple of days so it will probably be Thursday before I get a chance to visit a library to look at  " A Century in Focus " Photography and Photographers in the North of Ireland 1839 - 1939. W. A. Maguire. Published in 2000 by The Blackstaff Press and The Museums and Galleries of Northern Ireland (Ulster Museum). I feel that the photographers you name are mentioned in this book.

Best Wishes,

Christopher

Thanks Christopher. I have 4 of these studio photographs. Very nice photos. I think they would be taken too long ago for there to be any record of their names. I know one was of Agnes and Eliza Gallagher and was taken about 1862. Others could be taken about the same time I think. Agnes Gallagher was born 12.4.1847 in the village of Eden, town of Carrickfergus. Belfast. Ireland. Her father was John Gallagher and her mother was Jane McFarren.(think this is the couple in one of the photographs I have.) Agnes and her sister Eliza and a brother (I think) came to Queensland Australia when Agnes was 15. A brother John Gallagher was already here. (I think one of the photographs is of him) Interesting that the book you mentioned is by Maguire. Agnes Gallagher married Philip McGuire/Maguire here in Australia. He died and Agnes married my ancestor. I know nothing more of Philip McGuire/Maguire but presume he came from Ireland. Thank you for your interest. Last night we watched a TV interview here with the three McCartney sisters from Belfast. Very scary.

Belfast Photo Studio Dates?
« Reply #3 on: Friday 13 January 06 19:11 GMT (UK) »
Trying to find out dates for several family photos.  We have the names of the portrait studios (see below), and I'm trying to find the years they were in operation to date the photographs.  Thanks for any help anyone can give!  I've posted in the BELFAST forum because several of them designate BELFAST.

1. Reid Electric Light Studio; 81 High Street, Belfast

2. Macfarlane & Co; Omagh

3. Blair; Donegall Place; Belfast

4. Abernethy; 29 High Street; Belfast

5. Vienna Photo Art Co; Belfast; F. Charles, Proprietor; 14 Queens Arcade rate of 45 Donegal Place; Belfast

6. Cusick Studios; Photo is signed by photographer, Cusick.  No other info on it, but assuming it MAY be a child in our family named DAVID DUNLOP.  The photo has the name David Dunlop (not sure if there were more than one; he's the only one I've come across to date).  If so, it would be circa 1868.

REALLY new to this!  Not sure if the appropriate photography methods were around then as this is a VERY clear picture, but was kept in a cardboard sleeve.

Pls. help if you can identify any of the above portrait studios in Belfast & Omagh & the dates they were in operation.

Hi there Saz,

Is this the one you had in mind? I have asked Sarah to link the one on which we are posting at the minute and this one  -
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,69908.0.html
There was another site about a photographer in Portrush but I felt it was more about why people went to Portrush than about photography so did not include that one. Saz, would you agree or do you feel it should be linked too? What do you think Fad? http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,48107.0.html

Best wishes to everyone who has a common interest in genealogy, old photographs and photography.

Chris

Anthony -
Can you provide a source for the data?  I wasn't sure if you meant these places each opened in 1896 or that you found a source that said they were all in existence in 1896?
