Who registers soldiers death?

Hi

Can anyone tell me who registers the death of a soldier who dies in battle? Is it the Army or the Family? (In connection with world war 2)

I have emailed the war graves commission but as yet had no reply.

Many thanks in advance for your help.
Tonks in Birmingham. John, Lilian, Frank,Frederick. Where are you all?? Aston is mentioned. This side of the Tonks seems to be missing from all family trees - where are you all hiding??

Hi Dizzywitch, what are you actually looking for, if it is the death cert it may be possible to find the reference. Unsure who registers it.

Thanks for swift reply.

I am looking for the death of SGT Frank Tonks 5105915 he died on 28th May 1944 in Kohima.

I have seen his entry on the War Graves Commission and I have his war records but cannot find who/where his death was registered or how to get a death certificate.

I have emailed War Graves Commission but as yet had no reply.

Any help would be gratefully received.

The GRO reference is volume 11 page 165.

Sgt Frank Tonks 5105915  Unit A.C.C year 1944.

You can order the certificate in the usual way from the GRO.

£7 with the reference, it won't contain much more than it says on the CWGC site though. Maybe cause of death.

Hi Donna!

There are separate indexes for deaths of British servicemen who died during both WWI and WWII.  These are held by the GRO.  The death would have been registered by the military unit in which they served.  Many men - particularly in WWI - were only posted as missing - in the overseas death index on 1837 online go into war deaths index army - other ranks

hiya folks,the CWGC dont register deaths of soldiers and they never buried one,they merely maintain the graves and cemetaries in their care,the cwgc website is their way of being as much help as they can to living relatives,any war deaths are registered by the overseas deaths registers,these records came from various sources.if anyone has a query about the CWGC,then contact terry denham on the GWF,he will answer any question you want,and he has the overseas death registers.mack
