Hi,
I am assuming you have seen the 1881 census online at Family Search so have not given all the details.
RG 11/ 2664/15 page 21  16 Talbot Street, Ellesmere Salop
William and Mary plus 6 sons and 1 daughter.
William is obviously a very busy person (all those very young children to feed) his occupation being : Umbrella Maker, Cane Worker, China Mender, Cutter, Hairdresser and Letter Carrier!

I have searched 1871 and 1861 censuses-
1871 seems to be ok   21 Watergate Street, Ellesmere
RG 10/2788 Folio 12 pg 18
William Ellison  Lodger 27 yrs Hatter born Manchester - although in 1881 his place of birth states Bury.

1861 to vague at the moment to trace William
Will look for any others
Best wishes
Heywood

Bury is actually a northern part of Manchester, I looked it up online.  It's actually close to Blackley and Harpurhey, My GM was born in Blackley, her sister in Harpurhey, and the rest of the children in Levenshulme (southern Manchester).

I appreciate all the work you're doing, heywood!!  Thanks so much!

I have remaining questions about the Jacksons in Manchester.

All I have of this (my father's father's) side is my GF name, John Stanley Jackson, who married my GM, Annie Ellison (daughter of Thomas Ellison and Prudence Dykes).

I have John Stanley and Annies' wedding on 3 Sep 1927 in England (I'm assuming a district of Manchester)  Their children were born in 1937 and 1941 (both still living).  The family emigrated to California in the United States in 1946 or 1947.

Annie was born 19 Feb 1903 in Blackley, Manchester.

Any help with the Jackson side of the line would be fantastic!

Prudence is a domestic servant at 427 Rochdale Road Harpurhey Manchester aged 16 yrs (!)

As you can tell, we have a problem.  If she's born in 1880, as given in the 1881 census, she can't be 16 in the 1891 census.  Could this be a different Pru?

Hi again,
You are right re Bury- I am only a few miles from all the places! However Bury would not normally be Manchester whereas the others would.
Here we go:
Free BMD has a birth for Prudence- June quarter 1879.
There are quite a few Dykes families in the area around Audlem and there are two Josephs born around the same time - you find them on the 1881 census.
1881 census has Joseph, Eliza and children aged 7,5,3 and 1 (Prudence), living at Chapel End Audlem.
1891 has them at nearby Buerton village- Joseph 39 yrs        Buerton
Eliza   41   Whitchurch
Florance 9
Jasper 7
Frederick 5
elizabeth 3
George 1  all children born Buerton
The first time I looked I dismissed them as wrong family but I think they must be with a second set of children - all older ones presumably in work.
Although there are quite a few Dykes around- Prudence is the only one and I think that is her. I don't suppose people were two fussy about employing at 12 year old and of course the area is right for her meeting Thomas. What do you think?

Do you have a copy marriage certificate for Annie and John.
There are births on Free BMD - John Stanley Jackson
September quarter 1897 - Prestwich - covers Blackley/Harpurhey etc and
December quarter 1904-  Chorlton - covers several other areas of Manchester.
In 1901
Thomas and Prudence living at 10 Stirlng Street Harpurhey with Edith their daughter.
There is a Jackson family with a son John born 1897 living at 5 Tyson Street Crumpsall (Prestwich registration district) and if you go back to your map you can see it borders on Blackley/Harpurhey.
However- Jackson is a very popular surname!
The marriage certificate would have an address and father's detail for John Stanley.

I think I'm going to have to start by ordering the marriage certificate for Annie and John.  The problem is that I don't know WHERE they were married, all I have is a date and their names.

I'm assuming it's in Lancashire, some section of Manchester. Since this is the first form I'm filling out, any tips on what to put on the request (or if I can request online, which would be the easiest) ?

Jackson - Lancashire (Manchester)

Ellison - Shropshire (Ellesmere)
             Cheshire (Audlem)
             Lancashire (Manchester - Levenshulme
                                                      Hurpurhey
                                                      Blackley)
Dykes - Cheshire Central

Glassey - Cheshire
