Thanks for that Bee...but just last evening a fellow Forumer in King's Lynn came up with this report...
I have found the following account
SS TANGERMUENDE and the sinking of the EVENING STAR on the 21st of October 1905
The TANGERMUENDE was built in 1891 as the CRAGG by the Tyne Iron Ship Building Co., Yard Number 85 for Fisher Renwick & Co. Newcastle. She was a vessel of 666grt and measured 180ft length and 28ft beam and powered by a 3 cylinder triple expansion engine.
She was almost immediately taken over by the Lynn & Hamburg Steam Ship Co. Ltd., of King's Lynn, Norfolk, and renamed TANGERMUENDE.
The EVENING STAR was a wood ketch ( 2 masted sailing vessel similar to a yawl but with larger mizzen stepped well before the rudder ) built in 1873, registered in Hull and owned by a Mr. C Hartley of Norfolk who was also the Captain.
On the 21st October 1905 the EVENING STAR was on passage from King's Lynn with a cargo of wheat when she was in collision with the TANGERMUENDE during a Northerly Force 6. Captain Hartley and his cook went down with the ship but the 66 year old mate Harry Harrod managed to reach the shore but died from exhaustion.
Captain Leverett of the TANGERMUENDE stood trial on two counts of manslaughter but was aquitted of all charges.
Just what I was hoping for...xmas all over again!
Thanks
