Finey - Emsworth / Warblington / Portsmouth
« on: Tuesday 10 January 06 19:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,

On the lookout for information about the Finey family who moved from Pagham, Sussex to the Emsworth/Warblington area and may ultimately have ended up in Portsmouth.  I am positive all Fineys in this area are related but I have some broken branches on my tree.  I have a fair amount of info on one line but come to a halt with the children of Soloman and Tamar Page (Harris) Finey.  Soloman's son (also called Soloman) walked out on his family in Portsmouth in 1882 and emigrated to NZ (my gg-gf).  Family info has that when Tamar died all the inheritance went to the two other children that we aren't sure who they were.  One may have been John Finey (b. 1852?) and the other may have been Elizabeth (unsure if she survived infancy).

What has happened to all of the Fineys?

Thanks

Hi Infobunny,

Welcome to Rootschat.

John Finey (aged 29 b Emsworth) is definitely in Portsea in 1881, with his wife (aged 28 b Portsea) Emily.  No children. (RG11/1157/41 p31 - index and transcript available to search free at http://www.familysearch.org)

Soloman Finey aged 27 b Portsmouth is living with his cousins? the Painter family in Portsmouth.

Frank Finey b Bersted Sussex is in Warblington, Alfred also b Bersted is in Havant and George b North Bersted is in Reading.

No links to Soloman senior show up, but I hope that helps.

Hi Nell,

Thanks for your hard work.  I have been looking (until I'm blind) on Family Search but never came up with John Finey as a married adult so that's one more leaf in my tree (yay!) and another place to begin sniffing around.

Have no idea how Frank, Alfred and George fit into the tree but I'm positive they do.  I'll have to scrape Family Search dry and see how the jigsaw fits together using your information as a base.

The Soloman you found was my gg-gf a year before he left England for good.  But I agree I have found no links to Soloman Sr (yet).

The whole family was involved in shipping, maybe as colliers, and were mariners.  Maybe there is another board to investigate.

Thanks again

Hi Infobunny

I'm in Adelaide and for 10 years I have been doing research for peopleall over the world who want information about South Australia in the early days.

I saw your request re the Finey family and decided to see if I could find some information for you when I was in the South Australian records.

I have foud a lot of information, but when I typed it up I sent it to you at your email address, so you may already have received it.  I didn't realise there was a limit on how many letters one can print in their information, so I am sending it again, and will send what I found in bits:-  e.g.  part  one      part two etc. etc. etc.

PART ONE.

APPLICATION FOR FREE PASSAGE TO SOUTH AUSTRALIA.

Application No. 1981 Francis Finey, occupation labourer ex Littlehampton, married, aged 35 years, wife Maria aged under 50 years, son Robert aged under 14 years, Stephen, son aged under 7 years, Jane, daughter aged under 21 years and Edward, son aged under 7 years resided in District "B" in South Australia during the 1841 Census.

Also APPLICATION FOR FREE PASSAGE TO SOUTH AUSTRALIA.

Catherine Finey, occupation Servant of "Littlehampton" single, ged 15 years, applied for a free passage to South Australia. Application No. 2153, Embarkation No. 1342.

DISTRICT "B"

District "B" was lying chiefly to the Southwrd of the Town (i.e. Adelaide) and separated by Secion "A" on the westward of the town by road to Glenelg.

BAPTISM

in the 1841 Census in South Australia (the first census taken) the following can be found in the baptismal records:-

Edward Lloyds born 28th August 1938 son of Francis Finey and Maria of Glenelg, baptised in Holy Trinity Church, Adelaide

HOLY TRINITY CHURCH IN ADELAIDE.

In 1841, there was only one church in Adelaide, that being holy Trinity Church which still survives, and is still used in North Terrace, Adelaide.

Because it was the first church in Adelaide, it was the only place people could have their children baptised, or be married, or have a funeral.

MARRIAGES OF CHILDREN OF FRANCIS FINEY & MARIA.

1. Joseph Liddiard of Glenelg, late of Poplar Middlesex England married Catherine Finey of Glenelg, late of Arundel sussex England on 12th October 1840.

2. Stephen Finey aged 26 years son of Francis Finey married 21st March 1860 to Emily Ann aged 20 years, marital status not recorded, daughter of John Oates at Holy Trinity Church, Adelaide Dis. Adelaide reference book 1 page 91 symbol "V" denoting a variation in the information has been found by the Registar.

3. Edward Lloyd, of ful, age, marital status not recorded son of Francis Finey marrid 21st May 1865 to Emily Rhoda Crafer, of full age, marital status not recorded, daughter of David Crafer at St. Jude Church, Brighton District Adelaide reference book 62 page 489 symbol "A" denoting (1) The Registar has included additional information on this mariage record and/or (2) The Registar has made an amendment to information on this marriage record.

4. Stephen ged 26yeras son of Stephen Finey married 21st July 1891 to Annie Hecht aged 23 years, single, daughter fo John Hecht at Wesleyan Church, Hoyleton, District Upper Wakefield reference book 168 page 418

I'm very new to researching requests on the ROOTSCHAT site, so I will send children to the above marriages, and death records on another message reply instead of sending too much on one reply.

I hope that is alright with you.

Regards

Hi Twinkleberry,

Oh!  You are a most kind and generous person!  :o  I am overwhelmed by your attention to a matter as small as mine....but by no means ungrateful.  On the contrary, I'm flabbergasted to be honest.  This is precious information that I will carefully match up against what I have for my Oz Finey's.

Thank you so much for all of your hard work.  It is very much appreciated.  You totally rock! ;D

Now if only my English Finey's would fall out of the woodwork as easily as the Oz ones appear to have done.
