There's another alternative in 1891 - I know the age is a bit out but then if he was even younger than he admitted at his marriage and his wife was 10 years older then he could have fibbed a little bit.

I know Bereney isn't spelt the same but say it aloud with an Irish accent!
We will try anything to help, but we don't have a lot to work with at present and I'm wondering whether there are any family members who you could prise some memories of this man out of them.
My other suggestion is to try to get his birth certificate. There are two ways to go about this, the first is best and cheapest, if you can get to a Record Office and check the indexes for a few years around his birth, there seems to be a shortage of Michael Burneys about so hopefully you might touch lucky. If you can't get to a record office then you can try
www.1837online.com which has the complete set of indexes although it is a pay site. First of all you could try to narrow down those that you would have to pay for by using the "View Images" on
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ but they may not have the complete set.
If you can get the birth certificate it will tell you where they were living when he was born and also his mother's name, including her maiden name. I just keep my fingers crossed that he was born in England and not Ireland but with a name like Burney I would expect his father if not both parents were Irish.
