'A needle in a haystack'
« on: Sunday 08 January 06 11:36 GMT (UK) »
Hi, can anyone please help? I am looking for the parents of a David Evans (born c.1846 in Llandillo). Married a Rachel Richards (born c.1848 in Llansadwrn) on 26th February, 1870 in the Parish church of Llangadock. I am also looking for her parents, apart from those named on the marriage certificate. As you can appreciate David Evans is a very common name in that area. I have spent ££ s on incorrect birth certificates. In 1887 they lived in Brown Hill Farm (Heold du), Llandebie, Carmarthen. Many thanks.

Hi Fatima,

If you have the marriage certificate, do you have the Father's names at all?

Regards, Emma ;)

Hi Emma, Yes David Evans' father was David Evans - a wheelwright at the time of the marriage, and Rachel's father was  David Richards - a farmer at the time of the marriage. That may help to narrow the field slightly.
Thanks for replying so promptly.

Right then...searching for Rach* Richar* born in Carmarthenshire between 1843 & 1853 in 1851 gives me the following with Father David...I like the first one best...age wise, as for birthplace, my knowledge of Wales is not good!

Llandefeilog, Carmarthenshire

David Richard (Could be Richards, depending on the final loop!), Head, 43, Farmer of 50 Acres, Newchurch
Amy Richard, Wife, 48, Merthyr
William Richard, Son, 13, Llangunnor
John Richard, Son, 11, Llangunnor
Amy Richard, Daughter, 9, Llangunnor
Eliza Richard, Daughter, 7, Llandefeilog
Thomas Richard, Son, 4, Llandefilog
Rachel Richard, Daughter, 3, Llandefilog
Edward Richard, Son, ?, Llandefilog

HO107/2427 Pg 3

Although I like this one for the birthplaces...

Gilfach, Llandwra

David Richard, Head, 40, Farmer of 75 Acres, Talley Carmarthen
Anne Richard, Wife, 33, Llansadwyn
Mary Richard, Daughter, 11, Llansadwyn
Anne Richard, Daughter, 7, Llansadwyn
David Richard, Son, 5, Llansadwyn
Margaret Richard, Daughter, 3, Llansadwyn
Rachel Richard, Daughter, 8m, Llanwdra
Elizabeth Thomas, Servant, 30, House Servant, Llansadwyn
Jane Richards, Servant, 16, House Servant, Llancrwys
Thomas Jenkings, Servant, 21, Farm Labourer, Llanfererybryn
William Davis, Servant, 13, Farm Labourer, Llansawel

HO107/2470 Pg 9

Another thing, who were the witnesses at the marriage?  Sometimes that might give a clue!

The David Evans which matches best - birth place Llandilo on both 1851 & 1861 census records is not at home on either census!  He is a boarder on the 1861 census and his occupation looks like Tinworker.

On the 1871 census, there is a Rachel Evans, listed as Wife, but with no husband at home...

Rhosmaen St, Llandilo, Llandilo Fawr

Rachel Evans, Wife, 21, Mechanic's Wife, Llanwdra
Anne Evans, Daughter, 3mths, Llandilo Town

RG10/5487 Pg 42

Hi Emma, Many thanks for replying I will see where your entries lead me.
The entry in the 1871 census is the right family because I have them all entered in the 1881 census at the Rhosmaen Street address.
Regards, Fatima.   :)
