LAKER., Ebenezer - death in Victoria
« on: Tuesday 14 September 04 21:38 BST (UK) »
I am in receipt of a record from the Digger Pioneer Index 1836 - 1888 which gives a few death details of Ebenezer LAKER.  However, I have searched all of the ships passenger lists that I know of, as well as the Assisted Imigrants index on the Victoria government site, for any mention of when Ebenezer arrived in Australia, to no avail.

The scanty details from Digger are:  Ebenezer LAKER, father Joseph, mother Elizabeth, age 28, birth place Sussex, year of death 1858, registration no. 3148.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to find out more about Ebenezer on a ship's list and where and why he might have died.  His brother, Josiah, emigrated in 1855 (I believe that he followed Ebenezer out) and went to the goldfields.  I have Josiah's records.

(hope springs eternal)

If you follow the BDM links from here
http://www.dvc.vic.gov.au/bdm.htm (the actual link is miles long)
you can download an image of the death certificate which will hopefully give some more information -  which may include time spent in australia (thus approx arrival date) and family details. If he moved around Australia it may also give the state of arrival. (Information depends on who was the informant and what details were known).
It should certainly give cause of death.  There is a fee but it is not as expensive as obtaining a certified certificate. It costs $AU17.50(about 7.00GBP).

Do you know if he arrived as a convict or free settler? There is much convict information online.

Most of the state archives have shipping list information, but apart from the one you have mentioned, very few are online - although NSW has some at
http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/ (link to online indexes).

Hi Trish:

thank you very much for the response to my query.  The death certificate would be a wonderful thing to have, but at $AUS17.50 it will have to go in line behind my more pressing Birth Certificates.

I shall keep that link for future use.

I think he would have been a *free settler* and not a convict - although, you never know.  I think he was paving the way for his younger brother who followed him out a couple of years later.

The shipping records at nsw.gov... sounds familiar, however I shall try that link as it may be one that I have not seen before.

With gratitude

Hi JJ

It is annoying that all registry offices want to make money from selling certificates - Have you searched on line for burial/grave information - there is some around for Victoria.

Are you in australia? all the state libraries and/or archives have files on immigrant arrivals that you can search - but you have to visit the library. Look at the site online for your state to see what they have available.

good searching

Hi Trish:

No. I have not searched for burial/grave information because I don't know how!

I am in Canada and the Australian government websites do not offer much, if any,  information for free.  Except for the unassisted passenger list index on the Victoria gvt. site.   I did subscribe to that site, but the search fees are enormous!

I have searched all of the Victoria cemetery websites that I can find, to no avail.  perhaps you could point me in a different direction regarding burial/grave sites.

As ever

Hi JJ

I'm in Queensland which doesn't help much in getting to the Victorian archives office (about 1600km away). I'll keep your name on my list and check when I'm at the Qld archives or library (our library might well have something). If I find anything else I will let you know.  I just found this online
at http://www.prov.vic.gov.au/archivesvictoria/t1tbmain.asp
Wills (VPRS 7591) and Probates (VPRS 28) can be ordered via Archives @ Victoria, and then viewed at the VAC Reading Room. Copies can be requested at the time of viewing, if required. To make it easier for researchers, Wills and Probates can now be ordered via their file number using the Probate and Inquest Search engine (under searching in the main menu). They cannot be ordered by person’s name. To obtain the file number, the Probate Index must be checked. The Probate Index is on microfiche, and available at VAC and BAC Reading Rooms, as well as many Libraries, Genealogical Societies, and Historical Societies.

Don't know if any of your local associations would have a copy - the LDS might. I'll check it when I'm anywhere that has a copy.

Hi Grub:

Thank you so much for asking.  No success with finding Ebenezer LAKER records since this thread of 2004.  I have just about given up.  Do you know something you would like to share with me?
On the other hand, were you going to remove the post?  I see that it has been read so many times and hope that, eventually, a LAKER researcher might contact me.

Hi June
I personally have nothing to add, but felt that, if the post were brought back up to the top of the board, it would generate some renewed interest and we do have truly marvellous researchers, and they in turn have more resources.

If you had not responded, the post may have been moved at some point to our "COMPLETED" board, where it could still be accessed.

Fingers Crossed...
