Hell o there

I  am guessing  that in  the  past four years you  have not been able to buy his death certificates.  It  would be  interesting  to see who gave  the information, it was obviously someone who knew his parents details,  perhaps he married!!
Sometimes  you will also  get a little snippet  like  the ship  they might have arrived on.

kind thoughts Jenn

I have a number of ancestors who died around this time and are buried in the Melbourne General Cemetery so I emailed them on the off chance he was buried there.  Not many cemeteries open in Melbourne at that time, and I had searched some of the cemeteries in the old gold mining areas of central Victoria with no success.

I received an email today with the good news...... ;D

Ebenezer LAKER is buried in the Melbourne General Cemetery.  He does not have a headstone with his name on it but he is buried with

Baptist Compartment C Grave 13

Charlwood, Sophia aged 12 months buried 03.12.1854
Charlwood, Philip aged 22 buried 05.05.1856
Laker, Ebenezer aged 28 buried 24.04.1858
Charlwood, Stephen aged 31 buried 06.10.1858
Charlwood, Arthur aged 62 buried 28.04.1860
Charlwood, Jane aged 82 buried 18.04.1883

All of the above are buried with Ebenezer.

I found on the CD of Index of Transcriptions of Monumental Inscriptions to 1989 the following

CHARLWOOD

Here rest in sure and certain hope of a joyful resurrection to eternal life, the mortal remains of

Arthur CHARLWOOD born 15 Apr 1798, died 27 Apr 1860
and Jane his beloved wife, born 8 Jun 1800, died 17 Apr 1883

and also their children

Stephen born 10 Sep 1827, died 5 Oct 1858
Philip born 10 Apr 1834, died 3 May 1856
Susanna born 29 Aug 1842, died 7 May 1871
Elizabeth CHARLWOOD born 23 Oct 1829, died 4 Aug 1893
and their eldest grandson
Stephen James born 1855, died 1875
and four other grandchildren who died in infancy.
Blessed are the dead which died in the Lord.

From the death indexes in case they are relatives

CHARLWOOD Arthur
Father James  Mother Phoebe PENFOLD
1860   62 years  born in Surrey  Reg#4463

and this obviously a transcription error in the index..showing John instead of Jane...and only CHARLWOOD death in Victoria for 1883.

CHARLWOOD John [Jane]
Father  LATTEN Richard
1883  82 years  at Fitzroy South  Reg#5089

The age ties in with the ages on the headstone.

Do you know if these people are relatives?

This doesn't help with locating Ebenezer on the shipping records....you would have to download his death cert to find out how long in the colony.

Cheers

This death may help explain the reason he is buried with the CHARLWOOD's

Death

1856
CHARLWOOD Philip
Father Arthur  Mother Jane LAKER
22 years  Birth place Norfolk  Reg#2159

Very poor transcription of Jane's death cert in the post above...the father's name should be LAKER not LATTEN.

Cheers

Many thanks to those who have responded thus far.  In particular:

Jamjar:  That's me on the genforum post.  Unfortunately, nothing new there.

Jenn:  Good thoughts.  Yes, as I now have a connection (see below) I will be ordering the death certificate.

Cando:  What a treasure you are.  Yes, the CHARLWOODs are relatives.  In fact, Jane LAKER is Ebenezer's aunt and my 3rd great-aunt.  I have just recently found the Charlwood family emigrating to Australia (New South Wales) but did not connect them there to Ebenezer.  As far as I knew, he went to the goldfields in Victoria and died there.  I had searched all of the cemeteries that I could find in that area.

Ebenezer's  niece, Eunice Mary LAKER, born 1866 at Morrisons, died 1951 in Melbourne, not married and, as far as I know, had no issue.

As far as Arthur CHARLWOOD and Jane LAKER are concerned, they produced Phoebe who married Charles MUSKETT.  Phoebe and charles produced two children, Alice and Philip, both born Sydney, NSW.  Very interesting story.  However, neither of them married and again, as far as I know, there are no issue.  Looks as if the MUSKETT line has died out.

Thank you very much for posting that information.  It seems that so much of my family went to Australia, including a female first cousin (my generation).  Who she is is anybody's guess.

With gratitude
June

June I was delighted to receive that email from the Melbourne Cemetery....actually thought it was probably a waste of time asking them but then have had some successes in the past  :)  Ah the thrill of the chase ::)

The CHARLWOOD and MUSKETT names don't occur very often in the Victorian indexes...I will pm you what is there as you may find it interesting.   Charles and Phoebe actually had four children in Victoria, two of who died as infants.

If you already have the info and don't want it, you can delete it ;D

Cheers for now

Javajune,

Do you have any idea if your Ebenezer Lake was in the military and therefore part of the soldiers who were sent out to guard the convicts on their voyages?

If this is the case he would not show up in any shipping records. Howevere there are sites now focussing on these much forgotten  and most probably just as unwilling mmigrants as were the convicts.

Do you have an idea of the time fram?

This could be gained from inforamtion on his death certificate. Sometimes it is necessary to purchaes certificates because of the extra information on them that is not included on the online indexes.

You will probably know that Philip died 1909.
You can read his long will....

You are right, there were no heirs, Some to his sister ALice and much to charities and hospitals.
Sue

There are also the wills of his parents and also a number of your CHARLWOOD people.
