LAKER., Ebenezer - death in Victoria

I pm'd all the CHARLWOOD/MUSKETT bdm data to javajune after receiving the email from Melbourne General Cemetery...  The Vic indexes revealed that  Phillip and Phoebe were born in Melbourne not Sydney.

June,  Ebenezer may have arrived via South Australia either the ports  Adelaide or even Robe and travelled overland or via coastal shipping.  I had a number of Unassisted ancestors who arrived in Victoria via that route. 

For shipping records of unassisted emigrants arriving in Victoria before 1852 there are a couple of other resources but not online.  On is the Marion BUTTON's  Argus passenger index 1846-1851 [microform] / indexed and the name of the other one escapes me at the moment. The names have been transcribed from the newspaper the "Argus".

Hi Just came across this thread by pure chance, and I don't know if I can help or not, I don't know anything about this Ebenezer Laker but my late mum was a Charlwood she was a second cousin 3x removed from Arthur Charlwood and Jane Laker, I live in London England and know that Arthur and Jane went to Australia about 1850 they went to Melbourne Australia, and Arthur was a printer, I have quite a bit about the Charlwood family in Oz, even though I am in England ha ha, anyway, I was very interested to see your thread as we might be able to help each other, what I noticed, and also on other threads Arthur's parents are wrongly transcripted, his parents were a James Charlwood and a Phobe Wicks, I have actually seen their Grave and have photos of it 'somewhere' an Australia rellie called Don Charlwood  (great grandson of Arthur, who lives in Australia) has actually done a lot of research while in the Village Charlwood many many years ago, he also had made a beauiful Brass plaque made with all of the burial details on it......so it will be readable for other 100 hundred years at least. I am guessing as Ebenezer was buried with Arthur, Jane,and their children as he must have at the time been in Melbourne, there were an awful lot of Charlwood in Melbourne at the time, and of course there families are still there now...you need to search the Austalian passage list, if you haven't already, if you haven't I will try and do it for you if you like...

Arthur's son, Stephen had sailed with a number of other Particular Baptists, including two of his sisters and their husbands, on the Harpley. She berthed in Melbourne on 7 January 1850. Arthur and lane and their six younger children followed him on 24 October 1850 on the Success. so maybe Ebenzer went with then or follow soon after, anyway if this is of any help, just shout and I will see if we can help each other....best wishes and a happy new year to you........Lynda, a cuz from London.......

I spent a bit of time on the request for Ebenezer LAKER...so hence my interest. 

The information re Ebenezer's parents names on the death certificate would have been supplied by the informant....more than likely one of the CHARLWOOD family in Melbourne I would have thought, but it may have been someone else.  The purchase of the death cert would reveal all.

Re the shipping information.

There are no LAKERS on the Assisted lists into Victoria.

Unfortunately there are no online unassisted shipping records pre 1852 to  Victoria at PROV.  I think the  above resource of Marion BUTTON's is the only one that covers the period 1850.

Looking at the early bdm's for Victoria there were three families of CHARLWOODs in Victoria and I have pm'd all the data to June...hope she noticed the pm

I do hope June sees your post...she hasn't been online since her last posting on this thread.  From June's posts it appears she lives in Canada.

Hello, many thanks for your message, along with you, lets hope that June reads ours messages, I have just found on the Family Search web site, a Ebenezer Laker born 5 th Jan 1825 christened 25th March 1832 Independent-Nc, Horsham, Sussex, England parents Joseph and Elizabeth... so that fits.also christened at the Church are:
Caroline B.30 Oct 1827. Bapt 09 DEC 1827       Independent-Nc, Horsham, Sussex, England
Joseph b.15  Dec 1826 , Bapt 09 DEC 1829       Independent-Nc, Horsham, Sussex, England
Josiah b. 6 Dec  1831 .   Bapt 09 DEC 1832       Independent-Nc, Horsham, Sussex, England
EUNICE  b.16 jan 1834   Bapt  29 JUL 1837       Independent-Nc, Horsham, Sussex, England
Elizabeth 19 March 1824  Bapt 09 DEC 1827  Independent-Nc, Horsham, Sussex, England  parent Joseph and Elizabeth Laker.

While still a young man Arthur Charlwood left St Nicholas, the ancestral church of his family, and joined the Particular Baptist sect which had proselytized strongly in the area. In 1823 he married a Particular Baptist girl, lane Laker, who lived seven miles away in Sussex. They married in Brighton, being obliged by the law of the day to marry in the established church. In Brighton Arthur had served his apprenticeship and there he either set up in business or was employed as a compositor. .. I am wondering if this  Ebenezer  Laker actually went to Melbourne, rather than Victoria, as that might be worth a search, all of the Charlwoods went to Melbourne, so it would make sense that he went there first, anyway, June has enough to get on with. I too, will carrying on searching and see what I can come up with, many thanks again for your message....Lynda

Thank you for all you lovely words, I have actually been a member since about 2005!! lol, just never been on the chat boards,I didn't realise they were here !!! I have added quite a bit of information to different trees on here, I just never gone/bothered to go back on the Laker family before, as  they married into my family... but its all good stuff though, and other twig to my tree, fingers crossed that June reads her emails, and gets these messages, as I do have quite a bit I could share with her, and I am sure she could help me....now I have found these boards, I will be a regular visitor I am sure, there is always something you can find, no matter how much you have...and its great meeting distance rellies....see you all soon...Lynda .

Just for you info     Melbourne is the capital city of the State of Victoria....and I have searched for forwarded all the early LAKER bdm data to June.

Lynda  ....only trying to help.   I had to spend ages sorting out which board in England to place requests for help with my rellies...and I must say my geography of Lancashire and Cheshire [with the shifting boundaries over the years] has improved enormously.
