Hi Freeman

With regards to the Necropolis & Templestowe being near neighbours.  The answer is no they are not close to each other at all.

The cremations may have taken place at Springvale (South Eastern Suburbs) but the Ashes maybe at Templestowe (Eastern Suburbs) in a family grave site.  The 2 day difference could be that Fred died on the 25th and was cremated on the 27th.

The Necropolis at Springvale and the Fawkner Cemetery (Northern Suburbs) are the 2 major cemeteries for Melbourne.
This the link for Fawkner - http://www.fcmp.com.au/

I may take you up on your offer regarding Berkshire sometime as my Greco family are one major headache!!!!!

Cheers

Genni

Hi Freeman,
The 2 locations of the remains is a little puzzling.
especially as  the Springvale gravesites are marked 'in perpetuity" On the death cert , what is Doris's exact death date?  Is there an oddity of 2 days like Frederick?

I think we must read 'burial' at Templestowe for Frederick and Doris as 'interrment of ashes'  as Gennig says.

On the subject of cemetries, Boroodara  Cemetery was established in the mid-1800's to serve the areas of  Kew, Camberwell Canterbury etc.
When I was at the library I checked the Boroondara index for Varley, but none of the 3 or 4 entries were  Hilda.
They have an email for enquiries if you want to request a more thorough search as the details are not online.

Dear Genni,

Thanks for the Fawkner site - more browsing time required !
The point about Fred was that according to the info he was buried at Templestowe two days before he was cremated at Springfield !!?? An error somewhere ? - I am assuming that burial means internment of ashes.

Grateful if you can find out any more on Willmott/Varley or Varney deaths /marriages.

Kind regards
Freeman

Hi freeman

Anne Constance WALSH died Balwyn 1978 aged 71 Parents: Albert WILLMOTT & Minnie WHITE Reg: 3415
Doris Mercy BENNETT died Camberwell 1980 aged 84 Parents: Albert WILLMOTT & Minnie Reg: 10723

At Templestowe Cemetery (Mundy Lawn Section Row I Grave no 12) the following people are interred together. (It may be their ashes only)
Anne Constance WALSH (burial 13 Feb 1978)
Doris Mercy BENNETT ( burial date incorrect as its the same as husband)
Frederick John BENNETT (burial 25 Feb 1952)
Hilda Winifred VARNEY (Burial 26 Mar 1987)
http://www.users.bigpond.com/templestowe/Find_a_person.htm

So you can add another sister to the family.

When I go to the library next I will check death notices for you.  I'll also check marriages for Varney & Willmott

Cheers

Genni

Dear  Genni,

Using the vic.gov site I have found the death entries for Anne, Doris, and Frederick, which will lead me on to other searches in England and Australia.
However I cannot find a death for Hilda Winnifred Varney (or Varley) despite her "burial" above.

Any help or suggestions much appreciated.
Thanks again and best wishes
Freeman

Hello Freeman,
I wonder how much further you have got on this line of research since you lasted posted? I have not posted on RootsChat before. However I can add significantly to information on Hilda Winifred Varney (nee Willmott), Anne Constance (Connie) Walsh and Doris Mercy Bennett - they were respectively my great-aunts and grandmother. RE Templestowe: Hilda and Connie were both buried at Templestowe; some of the ashes of Doris and her husband, Jack were interred there much later by my father Bob Bennett. Jack was cremated and his ashes were kept by my grandmother until she died in 1980.
Hilda decided to join her sisters in Australia after Connie's husband died. They initially rented in Heidleberg before moving to Guildford Road. Later the 3 sisters lived briefly together in my grandmother's house at 25 Corhampton Road, North Balwyn until Connie died. You mention Hilda being your aunt and I am wondering if you are s descendent from the White or Willmott side of the family.
I have a lot of information about the families and many photos.
I look forward to hearing from you. Susan

Hi new to this site and found all this from doing a google on my grandfather!  Susan Barnett (nee Bennett) is my second cousin as I am the daughter of Derek Reginald Willmott, son of Albert Reginald Willmott and Alice Mildred Holden (Bob's first cousin).  I remember Doris, Connie and Hilda in our back garden when I was a kid in the 60s, likewise they are all my great aunts.  Hilda went to Australia in later life to join her sisters after trying to live with my grandmother after my grandfather's death.  Prior to that she married a Varney in Eastbourne UK but I don't know what year, only that he begged her to look after him until his death so she married him.  Sorry I should listen more intently to the family story for the facts, but if you want to know more just ask as Derek Willmott my father is still with us and long term memory in tact (short term not so good) and my mother knows the family history pretty well as well.
Freeman you say that your father is Hilda's first cousin.. gosh that makes you my second cousin once removed! (you being my father's second cousin) and same for Susan Barnett.  Was your father from the Willmott or White side of the family?  Did you know that the White side goes back to Mercy in my great great great grandmother's family, going back to Louis XIV of France!  Descendants from the wrong side of the sheets.
