High easter - has anyone been there?
« on: Thursday 05 January 06 09:51 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Has anyone been to High easter or does anyone live there? I am interested in any churches that may be there and how far back any cemetries may go as I am thinking of taking a drive out there to see if I can find any of the names that are in my family tree. How far is it from milton Keynes? Does Lofty Green still exist?
Any help much appreciated.
Karen

Hallo, If you google 'Essex Churches' you'll get several websites with photos of them -some with description and you can scroll down the list for 'High Easter'.
How long ago do you want to find because some graves don't last for ever -
Lofty Green - never heard of 'im ;)

Hallo Karen, Thanks for laughing :D  1850 graves are probably still there but not all graves have headstones. I'm going to Essex Record Office tomorrow - if you want I'll check out burials circa 1850 if you say which name

The dates would probably be after about 1880 now I think about it.
The names I would be interested in are Jemima Whitney, Mary Ann Whitney, Joseph Sewell and possibly Albert whitney, Lucy Whitney(Eve) and Samuel Whitney (Sewell).
Basically Sewell or Whitney
This side of my family tree is incredibly confusing!!!!!!!!!!!
Any help would be most gratefully received.

Best Wishes
Karen :) :)

Hi Karen .....

In terms of distance it's about 75 miles from MK to High Easter - So it's got to be about an hour and a half (off peak)  if you use the MI M25 and M11 ...... or two hours if you go cross country (i.e, Ampthill, Shefford, Royston/Buntingford and Bishops Stortford).

Lofty Green now seems to be known as Barnfield and is about 2 miles NE of High Easter.

A bit of a ghastly trip to see an absolutely lovely part of the world I'd say .... not the Essex of pub jokes at all !   Could be worth doing the extra few miles and going to the ERO at Chelmsford .... you'll probably get an awful lot more information from there  :)

Aye

Hi, Unfortunately Essex Record Office has no burial records for High Easter after 1857. By way of consolation (I hope) here are these extracts from High Easter burials 1813-1857 D/P 46/1/7 fiche 1 and 2
page year   Name                           when buried    age

                    alias JOYCE
87      1853  James SEWELL             May 1               1
83      1852  James SEWELL             June 28           52
81      1851  Mary WITNEY*              Sep 4              68
71      1847  Sophia WITNEY            Jan 20             17

45      1836  John SEWELL                Feb 11            68
42      1834  Anna Maria WITNEY      Oct 13           inft
37      1831  Thos WITNEY                Nov 1              24
34      1830  Wm WITNEY                 Oct 8               65
29      1828  Susanna WITNEY         Sep 25            67
28      1828  Mary WHITNEY*           Mar 30             60
14      1821  Charlotte WHITNEY      Mar 4               inft
12      1820  Mary Ann SEWELL        Feb 13             inft

Abode was High Easter in each case.

I agree with what ME said about the beauty of High Easter - it'll be a bit parky and wet  right now and few daylight hours but your search probably will be easier if you go before the vegetation gets cracking and obscures inscriptions. Good luck
