Was there a mill in BUCKLERSBURY?
« on: Wednesday 04 January 06 20:55 GMT (UK) »
My gt.gt.gt.gt. grandfather was a Timothy Welch who lived in Hitchin in Bucklersbury and is down on his daughter Jane's marriage certificate in 1844 as being a miller.
I know that one of his sons also named Timothy is listed in the 1881 as a miller at St Paul's Walden. Was there a mill in the centre of Hitchin???
I am almost sure that Jane Welch had an illegitimate son - Josiah in 1836 and have her marriage certificate to Thomas Bailey where she is listed as a spinster.

I would love to know which of the Welchs Josiah was living with in 1841 and whether he was living with his step-father in 1851.Sadly his mother died in 1851 - I think before the census.
If you think you can help me unravel the mystery I would be very grateful
Best wishes
From a genealogy fanatic!

In 1884 There wa a mill on the outskirts of Hitchin called Grove Mill. It was near a large house called Grove House. If this is any help to you.

Hi Jill,

Found an interesting entry on the 1851   ...

HO107/1710  F.7?  P.2.  Bucklersbury, Hitchin.
Thomas Bailey  Head  M  37  Boot & Shoe Maker  Northants Wilbey
Jane Bailey Wife  M  33    Hitchin
Josiah Bailey  Son  15  Boot & Shoe Maker  Hitchin
Ann Bailey  dau  2  Scholar  Hitchin
Eliza Bailey  Day 10 mths  Hitchin
Samuel Welsh  Bro in Law  U  25  Miller  Hitchin

This would appear to change your present thinking.

The Hertfordshire Burial Record includes a burial for Ann Bailey in January 1851 but the age is given as 5.

Many thanks for your response Peter, it was good to see that Jane did not die quite so young!
I still think that Josiah was given the Bailey name for respectability in the 1851 census as I have a copy of their marriage cert. in 1844 when Josiah was 7.
Interestingly on Josiah's wedding certificate in 1857 it has Thomas Bailey as a witness and Timothy Welch as the father.
I have Timothy Welch twice in my tree as his grandfather and his uncle!!
Is there any chance of Timothy Welch senior appearing in the 1851 census or his wife Martha ? Martha was born in gt. Wymondley and would have been 58

Hi Jill,

I have now trawled the 1841 & 1851 returns for the Hitchin area and have found Timothy & Martha

1841   HO107/445/1  F.15.  P.23.  Bancroft-Silver Street,Hitchin
Timothy Welsh  50  Miller
Martha Welsh  50
Sarah 20  -  Ann 17  -  Samuel 15  -  Maria 13  -  Josiah 5.
All born in county except Martha.

1851  HO107/1710  F.93.  P.32.  Old Park Road, Hitchin
Timothy Welsh  Head  M  65  Miller  Hitchin
Martha Welsh  Wife M  66   Hants, Bishop Walton.
Maria Welsh  Dau U  23  Hitchin
Ellen Welsh   Visitor  4  Scholar  Hitchin.
Timothy is recorded with a disability - blind.

The Hertfordshire Burial Record includes the following ...
02 April 1841  Timothy Welch  Age 80  Lilley (A small village midway between Hitchin and Luton)

The 1841 census for Lilley includes   ...
Hannah Welch  70  Supported by the Parish.
(Living with the Bennet family)

Many thanks for all your help.
It has been much appreciated and most importantly it's made the people in my past real.
I feel almost sure that the Timothy Welch you found in Lilley is probabely Timothy Welch the miller's father, but guess I wil never know as there is no christening record.
Still all the mysteries are what make this family history so compelling and addictive!!
once again many thanks.
Best wishes and a Happy New Year
Jill

Hello Jill,
Whilst casually surfing the net I was very interested to come across this correspondence about Timothy Welch, who was born around 1790.    He was in fact my Great Great Grandfather, so we are obviously  distantly related!
I am wondering whether you have possibly been able to unearth any further information about his antecedents since the last posting in 2006?
Regards
Ian

Dear Ian,
I have been unsuccessful at finding Timothy's parentage, But have got further back with his wife Marth Cook from Bishop's Waltham Hamps.
If you want any further information please let me know.
I have Timothy and Martha as having 9 children and would be interested to know which one you are descended from
Best Wishes
Jill
