Where did Francis DUFFIELD, married in 1778 in Great Melton, originate from?
« on: Wednesday 04 January 06 16:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi, Everyone,
My New Year's resolution is to try and discover the origins of my 4-times-great-grandfather Francis DUFFIELD, who married Susanna BALES on 02-05-1778 at Great Melton.  He is given in the register as being "of the parish of Barford", which is nearby Little Melton on the modern road map.  The happily married couple moved to Taverham, to the north, to raise a family, and there is a burial entry there for a Francis DUFFIELD, aged 82 on 26-06-1836, which would give him a birthdate of c.1754.
The only other Francis DUFFIELD on the IGI I can find is an individual born in Tuddenham Suffolk in 1743, but I feel that it is not the same man.
If anyone comes across a baptism for Francis Duffield in one of the villages in the area I mentioned, I would very much like to hear about it!
Very best wishes,
Keith

Hi  this is George Chapple.  I just sent you a message but I am not sure if it got there.  I think Francis Duffield is also my g g g grandfather but I am not sure.  My gg grandmother Susanna Duffield married a Samuel Miles in Norwich and in the census it said she was born in Taverham.  I have came across some of the Duffield being born there with similar names especially Emma which my Susannah also name a child of hers.  That name has went down the line and I have now a 4 year old by that name.  I wondered in if you have come across Susannah at all.  I cant find her getting baptised.  She would have been born somewhere around 1797 to 1800.  I look forward to hear from you.   Cheers George Chapple

My 4th great grandmother, Emma Duffield was received into Taverham church on 25 Dec 1807, but that's the only link I have found to Taverham so far.

My mum was born in Taverham, and I now only like 10 minutes from the church, and the other day I noticed a headstone of a Robert Duffield laying down by the wall of the church. If this is anyones relation please let me know as I'm more than happy to go and take a photograph of the headstone for you  :)

Hello Thank you for your response in regards to Francis Duffield.  I came across the entries for Francis Duffields children in the Free parish records site. I was wondering what you could tell me about your Emma?  My Susannah Duffield married a Samuel Miles in Norwich and had a William Jacob Miles  which had an Emma Miles which had my father Sydney Chapple.  My Susannah comes up in the Census records as being born in Taverham and I am pretty sure (of course we are never sure are we until we see a record ) that they belong to the same family.  Any info on Emma would be greatly appreciated.  Are you on GenesReunited?  I find it helpful.    Cheers gchapple

Hi, Everyone,
This is very remiss of me not to have responded to quite a lively conversation going on here, on a thread I started over 6 years ago...
I have had a very good look for the notes that I made when I visited the Norfolk Record office then, but have completely mislaid them.  I had the feeling that there were two DUFFIELD families producing children at the end of the 18thC, beginning of the 19thC, but only focussed on my own: namely, Francis and Susannah's children Amy, baptised 1780; James 1782, but died 1783; another James 1784; William 1786; Robert 1788; Samuel 1791; and my gt-gt-gt-grandma Mary Ann 1796.
I see now that Sue seems to have discovered that elusive baptism for George, for Susannah DUFFIELD - that sounds a very good fit!

N.B. And Olleyke - is there a date for that Robert DUFFIELD headstone, as I suppose it might just be for the person in my tree who was born in 1788...
Little did I know back in the summer of 1970, when I used to sit in the churchyard at Taverham during my lunchhours when I was doing my first teaching practice at the nearby Primary School, that my direct ancestor Mary Ann DUFFIELD had been baptised, then married in this church with its handsome flintwork, all those years ago...

Hi there.

Just been to look at Robert Duffields headstone, Although its fairly hard to read, I believe it says he died 1851, aged 61, I can't make out the month but the date is 19th.
