help wanted on Trimdon farm owners?
« on: Tuesday 03 January 06 21:40 GMT (UK) »
William Walton had farm called Glebe farm at Trimdon until at least mid 1800's by 1881 he was farm labourer and the family legend is it was gambled away.Want to find out about farm was it his or inherited through wife Elizabeth Brown from her father Miles Brown?Anything at all would be useful.
Any ideas where I can start? I live on the south coast so can't visit record offices etc.
Appreciate any help. x :-\

Angie,

There are Waltons still farming in the area.

I know an Alf Walton who has a farm at Low Hardwick (at the back of Hardwick Park) just outside of Sedgefield. He stopped farming a few years ago, and now runs an outdoor quad bike track on the land.

Have you seen this site, http://www.fishburn.org.uk ?

It lists residents in the area over a number of years, I see by 1914 the farm was in the hands of a John Todd.

I know most of the farms in the Trimdon area and can't place Glebe Farm, have you located it on any maps?

I wonder if it was actually in Fishburn on the site where Glebe House Old Folks Home was built?

Thanks for that info
The 1851 census lists his address as just trimdon
'farmer of glebe farm' I think the land was substantial.Apparently they also owned a lot of property in Trimdon  . even in my g grandas day 1875 - 1950 he collected rents on property he still owned in the area but my mum thought it was Staindrop area. ?
by 1861 he has only 6 acres and is retired .His son took over but by 1881 he too is listed as farm labourer - how the mighty fall! the talk in the family is of gambling etc?
His wife Elizabeth Brown also came from farming families in the area. Her father and brother both Miles Brown are listed as land propietors and farmer in all census info.Address in 1841 Monk Hesleden,Slaitley(?)They had monogramed stuff my mum tells me MBM she thought Miles Brown Walton? There were very old photos (men dressed up on horses etc)unfortunately all this dissappeared when my nan died.

The farms definately go back into the 1700's but I'm still looking into that.Doesn't help I live on the south coast !

Angie,

I've sent you a PM on Glebe Farm.

I've scoured the Ordnance Survey large scale maps around Trimdon and there is no sign of a Glebe Farm now.

I'll keep trying.

As promised I've checked with a few 'older' contacts in Trimdon Village and none have heard of Glebe Farm.

The only other suggestion I have for you is to try to make contact with the local history group in Trimdon.

They are called 'Trimdon Past and Present' and I believe you can contact them via the Local Library at Church Road, Trimdon Village.

Regards

Gerry

Have you thought of looking for wills?   If they had land they almost certainly left wills.  Many wills prior to 1858 are online on the A2A site or http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/
and those after 1858 are held at the Principal Probate Registry in London but I am sure local places will have the index.  I know it is on fiche at the Family Record Centre in London so it may well be at your nearest archive office or library too.
Worth a try
Andrea

Angie,

I had a call today from an old lady in Trimdon.

She remembers that Glebe House Farm was on the land to the east side of what is now Trimdon Labour Club (where Tony Blair goes on election night), in Front Street Trimdon Village.

The farm was knocked down she believes late 1930's or early 1940's.

A couple of bungalows now stand on the land.
