Oxshott/Stoke D'Abernon family inter relationships - Where next?
« on: Sunday 01 January 06 18:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi All, Happy New Year :)

I was wondering if anyone could suggest the best way to research this conundrum:

1851 - the census has Sarah SMITHERS, Daughter of Robert SMITHERS & Caroline ARTERS, born 1846 in Oxshott Surrey, listed in the house of Charles DODSON & Jane (late RAFFELL) as COUSIN, in Thames Ditton, Surrey.  Charles was born Hampton Wick in 1825ish and Jane in Oxshott, abt 1824.

I have researched quite a bit of the tree for Sarah SMITHERS as she was my 2nd Great Grandmother, but have no link to either the DODSON family or the RAFFELL family so far.

Sarah's Grandparents were John ARTERS & Sarah SPICER, and Thomas SMITHERS & Grace (Unknown)

Any ideas on how I can find out if they were related or not would be very much appreciated. If they were not related why would she have been with them several villages awayfrom her family?

Regards
Pauline

Have you tried to find Robert Smithers and Caroline on the 1851 census ? could they be dead? Have you a birth for Robert Smithers? Do you know of any female siblings that could have married ..... Jane late Raffell could that be a first marriage as it does not say maiden and her maiden name could be Smithers or have I completely lost the plot? :-[

I found Robert and Caroline on the 1851 census, long before I found their daughter Sarah (my G G Grandmother) I was always bemused that I couldn't find her with any known family members. I also have a birth for Robert SMITHERS - His parents are Thomas SMITHERS & Grace. Unfortunatley I haven't yet researched the church records - I just have information from IGI which doesn't give Grace's maiden name.
Both Thomas & Grace where born in COBHAM.

I was also wondering if RAFFELL was a married name (I don't know if she was married before or not)

Maybe I have to get thier marriage certificate to find out who Janes father is......

This is very complicated - perhaps you can help?  :D

In 1861 William SMITHERS seems to have taken over the Bear Inn where Robert, Caroline & Caroline's mother Sarah ARTER are found in 1851.  He has a daughter Sarah (as mentioned above) and a son Robert - among others.

William seems to have married Sarah SPICER in 1840.

There is also an Elizabeth ARTER with them in 1861.

The only Robert SMITHERS I can find in 1861 is widowed - did Caroline die?  That would explain why Sarah was not at home in 1851 maybe - if her mother was too poorly to look after her?

Have you found your Sarah in 1861?

More questions than answers!

The Bear Inn actually passed through the hands of several the two families.

Thomas SMITHERs & Grace  had 9 children (that I know of for certain)
Grace 1808, James 1811, Thomas 1814, William 1816, John 1818, Robert 1820 (sarah's Father) Charles 1822, Emma 1824 & Elizabeth 1827ish.

William Married Elizabeth Spicer in 1840 and they also had a daughter called Sarah born in 1847. Robert married Caroline Arter 1842 (daughter of John Arter and Sarah Spicer. - who was probably related to Elizabeth but not proved yet) Caroline died in 1854 of gastroenteritis - leaving Robert with Sarah (their son Robert Charles died in 1852 age 1)

I haven#t yet worked out how Elizabeth Arters is related to them.
