Kirkpatrick - 1871 look up
« on: Saturday 31 December 05 09:32 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I'm interested in William and Sarah Kirkpatrick who lived on the Isle of Wight,. They died in 1875 and 1874 so should also be in burial records.
Can someone tell me if they were married and any relatives if possible and were they there in any previous Census records

Many thanks Jack

Hello again Jack

Not in Hampshire in 1871 - do you know anything else about them (where born or when would help)?

Thanks

Oh you've gone.

Just so I don't forget there is a possibility in Walsall - a manufacturer with children Howard, Vincent, Mercy & Sarah.  Ref RG10/2965/118/8.

Can post the whole thing if this looks likely?

Hello Arranroots

I am afraid this was a bit of a long shot. These people appear to have been constantly on the move. I can't be sure they are the correct Kirkpatricks I am after. Their children's names are not what I was hoping for.

Probably best not to follow this one any further.

Your help is much appreciated

Thanks Jack

Nil desperandum, Jack!

This is just the first one - there are others!

Why not post the names of the children - it helps considerably and can be a handicap NOT to know them - or are you checking up on me LOL??  :D

I found the entries in the BMD index from the IOW FHS.

http://www.isle-of-wight-fhs.co.uk/bmd/start.htm

William died in 1875 aged 73, Sarah died in 1874 aged 71, both in Ryde RD.  There was also a Frances Ann Kirkpatrick aged 75 who died in 1876, also in Ryde RD.  Interestingly Sarah's entry includes the name Sweet - possibly a previous married name?

A Susan Kirkpatrick married Henry Daly at St Mary Carisbrooke in 1852.  They had a son Edward Dermot Daly in 1853 and another Hugh in 1860.  No other Kirkpatrick marriages on the IOW 1837-1874.

William Kirkpatrick is listed on 1851 Census in Brighton:

HO107/1646/582 p 46
schedule 143 29 Montpellier Crescent Brighton

William Kirkpatrick Head Mar 48 Manager London & County Joint Stock Bank Brighton, b Carisbrooke, IOW
Frances Anne Kirkpatrick Wife Mar 49 b London Middlesex
Elizabeth Frances Kirkpatrick daur U 19 b Newport IOW
Alice Kirkpatrick daur U 13 Scholar b Ryde IOW
William Coates Serv U 27 House servant b Ringmer Sussex
Caroline Earle Serv W 58 House servant b Firle, Sussex
Elizabeth Earle Serv U 35 House servant b East Dene Sussex

In 1861 William, Frances and Alice are visitors to a house in Reading, St Giles

RG9/748/16 p 25
3 Albion Place, Reading

Henry Rutherford Smith Head Mar 40 Proprietor of Houses b Stoke Newington Middlesex
Henrietta Anne Smith Wife Mar 34 b Carisbrooke IOW
Wm Kirkpatrick Visitor Mar 58 Fund Holder b Carisbrooke Hants
Frances Anne Kirkpatrick Mar 59 b London Middlesex
Alice Kirkpatrick visitor U 23 daughter b Newchurch Hants
plus three servants

in 1871 William and Frances appear to be in Honiton Devon:

RG10/2039/87 p 9
High Street

William Kirkpatrick Head Mar 68 Banker b Northwood Hants
Frances A Kirkpatrick Wife Mar 69 b London Middlesex
Alice Kirkpatrick daur U 33 b Ryde Hants
John H K Smith grandson U 22 Acct b Hastings Sussex
plus a servant

The Sarah S Kirkpatrick is the grandmother of Hugh Daly and widowed on 1871 census (RG10/1165/42 p 36), with both Hugh and a granddaughter with her (the granddaughter born in India).  Sarah is of independent means and was born in London.

Does that help?

Nell  :)

Hello

I thought they may be the parents of Rose Ann Kirkpatrick who according to LDS records was christened in an independant church at Aston Tirrold Berkshire on 17.1.1832 In this record her parents names are William and Sarah

In the Berkshire lookups (See Chamberlain) Paul Gaskell of the Oxfordshire FHS thinks I am off track with my search as nothing shows in his records. I feel the family may have actually been based in London in the Shoreditch area and only temporarily in Berkshire.

The facts that I have:
She married Henry Hardy and moved to Southampton where she lived with her family for the rest of her life. The birth certificate of her first child Kate shows her (Rose)surname as Hardy late Chamberlain formerley Kirkpatrick. LDS records show the marriage of Rose Ann Kirkpatrick to William Chamberlain took place on 16.8.1856 in Shoreditch London. She had her first child and married Henry Hardy in London.

My supposition:
I felt that in their later years William and Sarah may have followed their daughter's family to Hampshire (Isle of Wight )and as Kirkpatrick is not a common name and their ages were about right hoped a connection would show up with this old couple. The information from Little Nell makes me think I am wrong. Sarah Sweet Kirkpatrick is a
possibility but I may be barking up the wrong tree (family tree!!),

Kind regards Jack

Hi Jack,

I think you can discount Sarah Sweet Kirkpatrick.  She was already a widow by 1851, she was born in Aldersgate London and her mother was Elizabeth Hughes.  Her husband was Edward Kirkpatrick, they married in 1824 and they had a daughter Susan Elizabeth Ellen Kirkpatrick in 1826.  They were also non-conformists!  And had pots of money by the looks of it.

The William & Sarah you are looking for had another child - James - baptised in Aston Tirrold in 1828, so maybe not so fleetingly in Berkshire after all.

What did Rose's father do for a living?  I think you need to find Rose in 1851 (if you haven't already done so) to see if she is still with her parents and if so, where.  Only then can you start being certain about William and Sarah's origins.
