Found something..

Crawforth, Joshua, yeoman, 1, 19 f.
Crawforth, Matthew, yeoman, 6,24 h.
Crawforth, Robert, 2, 29 f.

This is in Connor and Coltson's Directory of Ontario County, 1869/70. (Part 3) for the township of Whitby. Whitby is the county town of this township

If I recall correctly the first number is the Concession, the second is the lot, so Joshua for example was on Conc 1 Lot 19 and was a farmer (f) I can't recall what 'h' means but I will find out

I will double check on the Lot/Conc. order of numbers (it isn't given online) but this is really great as you now knokw where they lived and can get into those other land records I mentioned! The Abstract Index to Deeds will tell you exactly when they got their land, and under what conditions.

hi Lin, me again :)

I did a little search of OCFA (Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid ) http://www.islandnet.com/ocfa/

and found the following

Surname Given Name Cemetery County Township Reference

CRAWFORTH Matthew Oshawa Union, North Presbyterian, Section D Durham Whitby East WO-
CRAWFORTH Joshua Oshawa Union, North Presbyterian, Section D Durham Whitby East WO-

You should go and have a search on your own -- and then look up the Reference (in this case "WO" ) at http://www.islandnet.com/ocfa/fields.html  That will tell you where and how to get the full burial/cemetery/gravestone record for the cemetery they are buried in

Simpson, Fuller, Page, Stead, Caspall, Philpott, Williams, Elvery, Whibley, Fryer/Friar, Sutton, Grant, Allard, Packman, Steadman, Norris, Drury, Boughton, Spratt, Munday, Rabbit, Wildbore

Lin,

I did a search on the Canadian County Atlas Project website for Crawforth in Ontario County, Whitby and got a J. Crawforth, settled 1845, "Nativity: England, Business:  Farmer", with four lots.  The atlas was published in 1877.  You can view the images online and order proper copies, too.  It lists concession and lot, as well as lot size.

Thanks JJ! I'm just the curious obsessive sort, that's all ...

To answer your question a yeoman is a sort of gentleman farmer as far as I know.

I think I goofed when I said "f" in the post I wrote was for 'farmer', I'm thinking now it is 'freeholder' so I will check on that in the morning.

Greetings Everyone, :)
Wow! :o Thanks for all the work you have done on my behalf.  I am very appreciative and it's great.

I have a lot to digest and most of it I was not aware of.

Thanks again everyone :-*

Your little Willliam was also in the same OCFA  listing as above:
CRAWFORTH  William  Oshawa Union, North Presbyterian, Section D   Durham   Whitby East   WO-

As well as an Anne,  James, Bertha Arabel, and Anne...so could also be your family.  Glad that we could help!

All the best, J.J.

Just had another go at the LDS site and you have some Crawforths listed in the I.G.I....Something of note is that the 1881 list I gave you seems to be the only Crawforths in Canada. Perhaps the census is not complete on this site, then. ( Although odd spellings or miss-spellings may have occurred)...so I will list them for you, altho keep in mind that these are submitted by descendants. Perhaps Susan and Mark & Matthew ( below, as parents)  may have been sons & daughter to your Joshua, before he died?? Something to look into.

Susan Crawforth - I.G.I. Birth: 1859 , Female Marriage: 10 FEB 1886 death 1943 Canada  No parents listed....

Bertha Arabell Crawforth - I.G.I.Birth: 02 NOV 1884 Whitby Township, , Ontario,
Olive Cordelia A. Crawforth -I.G.I.Birth: 24 MAY 1881 Whitby, Ontario,
Martha Beatrice Crawforth -I.G.I.Birth: 28 MAY 1893 Whitby Township, Ontario
Alma Whitney Crawforth -I.G.I. Birth: 11 FEB 1887 Whitby, Ontario,
Father: Mark Crawforth       Mother: Lydia Cribb

Nancy Crawforth - I.G.I. Birth: 27 MAR 1875 Whitby,  Ontario
Father: Matthew Crawforth     Mother:     Eliza Parks
