wells family in Renhold
« on: Wednesday 28 December 05 05:17 GMT (UK) »
My ggrandparents Martha Wells and William Elijah Lee were married in Renhold in 1835.  My ggrandmother Priscilla Jane Lee was born in 1849 in Renhold or Kimbolton--I know that the three went to America in the 1860's, but I don't know if there were other children (Priscilla's siblings) that might have stayed in Renhold (or Kimbolton, home of wm. lee) after the parents left the country.  there may have been a son Arthur who also left England.  Anyone else?

Hi Marie Sue - and welcome to RootsChat

The family is on the 1861 census, though I am afraid I am having difficulty in reading it (my computer's problem). Here's what I can make out - and I hope someone else can add to this.

Martha A, 45
Sarah W., 22
Priscilla J., 11
Arthur R. 9

plus two servants

Martha born Renhold; all the others born Kimbolton.

1851
Kimbolton, Carnaby??

William E. Lee, 39, Draper and tailor [??]
Martha, 35
Agnes Amelia, 14
Sarah Wells, 11
Priscilla Jane 1
infant 2mos
George Bell, apprentice tailor

Cheers,

Ros

Hi again,

It seems that Sarah Wells Lee also went to the States. There is a quite detailed and well sourced thing about her on Ancestry, which you can access for free through:

worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com

Actually there are two entries, but one of them is headed  'Currently closed due to my personal divorce proceedings'!!

She married a Charles James Wright, and I would guess the info is coming from that side of the family.

And Agnes Amelia is there too - and she married Charles Wright's brother Christopher!

Hope you can find this - let me know if you have problems.

And again,

The same source also has Arthur and Priscilla Jane! You obviously need to get in touch with this person ... (email address given on site).

Yes I agree with Ros, the house in 1861 is called Kingsfold,in Billingshurst Sussex. I wonder if the bit after farmer of 230 acres says emp 4 men?

Hi Ros and Carol,
Thanks for your help!  The Wright connection answers some of my other questions--I've e-mailed to the person that has some info on Sarah Wells in the US...now do you have access to any info on the Lee family in Kimbolton (William Elijah's father I believe was Robert) or John Wells and wife Martha (Tossel or Tassel)?  The latter are parents of the Martha who married William...thanks again for the prompt reply...Marie Sue
