Samuel Balmforth, Hartshead area early 1800's
« on: Wednesday 21 December 05 21:58 GMT (UK) »
Hi all, hoping someone can give me a guiding hand as I'm stuck!

My great-great-great grandmother Elizabeth Balmforth married Joseph Tansley at Hartshead Church (St. Peter's) in West Yorkshire on July 10th 1837.

I have a copy of their marriage certificate and the bride's father is listed as being Samuel Balmforth, Farmer. The residence of both bride and groom at time of marriage is listed as being Birkhouse.

I'm interested in trying to track down the bride's family in Hartshead, as I will be visiting that area from overseas in a month or so and I'd very much like to visit the churchyard in Hartshead and see if any of my family is buried there. However I'm finding it hard to find any trace of a Samuel Balmforth in that area at that time - I can find a couple of the right sort of age on the 1841 census but my knowledge of the area is not good enough to be able to tell if they are the same families. Can anyone help, please? I'd really appreciate it  :)

Hello Helendha

I think your area is Gildersome which adjoins the places you mention.
1841 Census in Gildersome are -
John Balmforth 45 Farmer  and Mary 50 with sons Joseph 20 and John 20.
Also 4 Tansley children Selina 14, Ann 13, Henry 7 and Jane 3  living with Samuel Reynor 25 Coal Miner I and Elizabeth Reynor 30. The three older children, Emp in coal mine.

What are the 1841 areas you have found. I am still looking.

Oly - thanks so much for the pointers, they've realy given me a kick-start.

The Cleckheaton families look particularly interesting as I know for a fact that some of my later family lived there, so that would make sense - and my family 'profession' was iron moulding for many generations. The fact that there is a Tansley family living right next door to a Balmforth family is also just too much of a coincidence! Can you tell me where you got the info from, please? - on Genealogist it just shows Joseph, Elizabeth and Emma living together and I can't work out how to see who their neighbours were??

Oooooh...I also just found a Samuel Balmforth on the 1841 census of the right age (70), listed as being a farmer, with an address of 'Birch House Bradford'....on the wedding certificate I have, the address of the bride is listed as being 'Birkhouse' and I wonder if this could be an error in the transcribing (so Birkhouse has become Birch House). What does anyone think - or are these both 'real' and separate places? And does anyone know of a website where I can see an image of the 1841 census so I can see for myself and jusge if there has been an error?

Thanks in advance all you lovely people  :)

Wendy - yes, that is the same family as I found on the 1841 census, though on genealogist.co.uk the address has been transcribed as 'Birch House' and 'Mannessah' has been transcribed as 'Margaret'. Other than that, the names, occupation s and ages are the same.

OK, now I'm getting excited as it sounds as though I've managed (with your help!) to move the family history back another generation.

Do you mind telling me which website you got the info from? Sounds as though it's a much better source than Genealogist - at least in this area for this period!

HI

If you try this link it will also show the area that BIRKHOUSE covers today although some maps dont recognise it.

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=415500&y=424500&z=3&sv=415500,424500&st=OSGrid&lu=N&tl=~&ar=y&bi=~&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf

It is Mannasseh (or Variation on spelling) as he also appears on later census married with a wife and children.

Wendy

P.S  I have also sent you a PM
