Hi,

I have a little more for you now.   The tree I am researching also connects to Stephen Philpott via his sister Emily who married Henry Walker b.1800 Whitstable occ Mariner.  I believe that Emily & Stephen Philpott were children of Richard Philpott & Ann Barham who were married in St Pauls, Whitstable in 1794.  There were seven other siblings that I can find, all born in Whitstable btw 1795 & 1816.

Also, I found nine children for  your Stephen Philpott & Eleanor Tall including Elizabeth, William, Ellen, George, Amelia, Stephen, Richard, James b. 1851 (m) Charlotte Webb;  and Frederick b. 1853.

Great to see a photo of Amelia Philpott Adams b.1843.  Any idea how old she was when this photo was taken?

I have the following  information re Emily Philpott b. 1800 which you might be interested in .  It also shows her as a widow  living with her widowed brother Stephen the blacksmith between 1871 & 1881:

Here is her baptism:-
1804 Dec 16 Emily D of Richard and Ann PHILPOT
Whitstable, Kent

She married, mariner, Henry Walker on 18th June 1826 in Whitstable and they had at least six children:- Phillip, Annie, Philpott, William ., George and Henry.

She was widowed some time between 1843 and 1851.  I don't know what became of her husband Henry Walker but presume he died at sea.  I have not been able to trace a death registration for him locally.

Emily (63) shows up on the 1871 Census living at 3 Fountain St, Whitstable, Kent, with her widowed brother James Philpott the Blacksmith:-

James Philpott,  Head, Wid,  52,  Blacksmith,  b.Whitstable, Kent
Emily Walker,  Sister, Wid, 63, occ: Laundress,  b.Whitstable, Kent

Another ten years passes and on the 1881 Census(1)  Emily (76)  is still  living at 3 Fountain Street, Whitstable, with her widowed brother:-

Emily Walker, (76), widow, sister, born  Whitstable, Kent
James Philpott (64), widower, head, occ: Blacksmith, born Whitstable,Kent
Ref: Whitstable District:  FHL Film 1341229. RG11 0964/16 25

Emily lived to be a very old lady and died aged 95 on the  18th October 1896 at 79 Victoria Street, Whitstable, in the presence of her daughter in law Eliza (Wyatt) Walker, who registered the death on the 19th October 1896.

Hope this  is of some help.

Hi Juniper,
                The information is great.
The photograph of Amelia is part of family group around 1890 1900, which would make her around 45 to 55 years old. Amelia had at least 7 sons to William Adams :-
William J Adams 1865, Edward R Adams 1868, Arther Adams 1870, Alfred Adams 1877,
Josiah Adams 1878, Albert Adams 1881, and my Grandfather David Adams 1883-1962.
I have another photograph of Amelia when younger with a little girl on her lap, could be a younger sister but will have to make a lower res of it to post it.
The family moved to South Shields around 1900 do not have much information of what happened to them from 1890, They were all mariners.
I have William in 1891 as a border in Westoe South Shields.
Then on board a ship in 1901 at London Docks aged 62.
Amelia was in Whitstable with the family in 1881.
Cannot find anything for 1891 but may have found her visiting in Camberwell, London in 1901.
Nothing after that.
Their eldest son William J Adams was in Westoe aged 26 in 1891, and 1901 and married Ann Jane Brannen and had a child Sarah A Adams in 1888.
Edward R Adams was in Whitstable in 1881 aged 13, but have nothing more on him.
Arther Adams Married an Esther and had a daughter Mary A Adams and lived at 398 John Williams Street, South Shields in 1901. I think Arther died at sea and his brother Alfred Adams then Married Esther.
Alfred then married a  Mary Ann Maguire and had a daughter  Noreen  Adams in 1927.
Josiah Adams was in Whitstable in 1881 aged 3 but have no more info on him,
Albert Adams was born in Whitstable in 1881 and have photograph of him in his 40's. I know he lived in South Shields somewhere.
David Adams the black sheep of the family lived in South Shields, ran away to sea at 14.
My mother says for all the rest of the family lived so close to them they never visited.
 All the best Willowmac

Hi,
Wow! Thank you so much.   Great to see the pics and information about Amelia's family.
I did manage to open the third pic and like you wonder who the little girl is.
Obviously they are in their best or new clothes and possibly a wedding day as the little girl is holding a flower.
Have you checked weddings around the early to mid 1860s to see if one of the siblings got married then?
I have checked little girls on the Walker line in case she is one of ours, and only child I can find who might be a possibility  is Julia Walker born 1861 however that is rather late.  she could more than likely be one of the Philpott cousins. Guess no way of knowing after all this length of time but definitely family as all dressed up for the occasion.
Cameras were not that common outside of studios in those days, which makes me think it probably was a wedding day and a family member snapped this in the back yard when they got home.

Have had a look at what I have on top of the tree Richard Philpott and found this:-
I believe this is his marriage:-
1794 May 31 Richard PHILPOT Tp Ann BARHAM St Pauls, Cant L John Brice
Could this be his burial in Whitstable:-
1843 Dec 13 Richard PHILPOT 71 Whitstable
I found this list in the Forum on the Oystertown website (Feb 2008):-
Whitstable Parish Register KFHS CD-ROM22 Baptisms
4361 1800 Dec 28 Sarah D of Richard and Ann PHILPOTT
4425 1802 Dec 26 Richard S of Richard and Ann PHILPOTT
4679 1807 Mar 22 Thomas S of Richard and Ann PHILPOTT
4735 1808 May 08 Wm Henry S of Richard and Ann PHILPOTT
Whitstable Parish Register KFHS CD-ROM22 Marriages
1141 1794 May 31 Richard PHILPOT Tp Ann BARHAM St Pauls, Cant L John Brice

Thanks again for your kind help.  Very grateful.

Hi,
It look like the first family photograph is of William Adams family, I had thought the woman seated was the same as the second photo but maybe is my Great, great grandmother Bethia Ratcliff.
Cheers Willowmac.

 PHILPOTT FROM DEAR KENT
Know that you are doing Philpotts in Thanet.
Are these any connection with Philpott - mainly mariners - all born in Deal. Any relations of George Edward Augustus Philpott  1844  son of William 1816 would be great. They were involved in lots of rescues at sea and at least one was in the Marines. Thanks .
