1861-1871 WOOLWICH census surname COUSINS
« on: Monday 19 December 05 09:53 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking at the marriage entry for my great grandfather, married 1871 at the Woolwich Presbyterian Church on New Road, Woolwich. I cannot figure where he and his father lived, though.

Could someone please look up for me the names Alexander Young Cousins (b. 1841) and Henry Cousins (b. circa 1815)? I feel they must have lived near-by...

On the certificate Alexander's occupation is 'seaman' and Henry's 'gardener'.

Thank you very much.

Mark.

The family was living in W Ham after the marriage so maybe they were there beforehand..I see Alexander was born in Scotland and as a seaman may not have been around for the census...I found his death 1897- did you have it?

I'll post the bits here in case someone else can help find them in  a census- maybe start with Ellen to see where she was in 1871. Also, the marriage cert may not mean that the father was living or even in England - so maybe that is why no one has been able to help find him in a census.

Deaths Dec 1897

Almost certainly he would have worked in 1881 at Tate & Lyle's place, and he'll probably be in Essex if anywhere. See http://www.portcities.org.uk/london/server/change/storyInPictures/contentId/22/contentType/ConGallery/chapterId//viewImage/1

Thank you Jocelyn and  Pauline, Henry was present at the 1871 wedding as he made his mark.

Some of your information is new to me Jocelyn; I didn't have Alexander's death date. Now I have to find where he's buried and see if I can get out of this dead-end by that means.  How many cemeteries would there have been for Presbyterians in West Ham?

a) The wedding was 1872 not 1871. They could well be out-of-area at census time.

b) The mark of Henry doesn't mean that it was Henry the father who signed it.
It could be a brother of the groom for example. Don't make assumptions.
