Could someone please check for the following two marriages in sussex:
 - Griffess TREE/S and Elizabeth KING. Believe to be about 1833.
 - ???? TREE/S and Elizabeth ASHDOWN* probably around 1790 - 1809
*Elizabeth Ashdown is mother to Griffess. He was born 1808 in Rye or Northiam, East Sussex.
Thanks,

Thanks Rob,
The christening of William G and Sarah E. you mentioned are the two children born in England before they came to Australia.
I'm a novice so for my reference records could you please explain SMI and BIVRI and the scope in years the indexes cover.

SMI is The Sussex Marriage Index up to 1837,  complied by the Sussex Family History Group.  Contains most recorded Sussex marriages before 1837 but not all,  no marriage recorded for your Elizabeth Ashdown.  Could be that you have the wrong name here or a marriage outside Sussex or just not part of this index,  perhaps there is no surviving record.   Note that there are some possible marriages of Elizabeth's to Tree's,  could you post up your evidence for Elizabeth Ashdown.

BIVRI is the British Isles Vital Records Index 2nd edition, a set of 16 Cd's produced by www.familysearch.org,  in most cases the data compliments the IGI but there is some overlap.  Records mostly cover chistenings and some marriages,  same date range as the IGI.

Thanks.
I have little info on parents of Griffith TREE. Only mention is on Australian Death Certificate which stated father unknown and mother Elizabeth ASHDOWN. Informant of information was a daughter. From experience, what children know of their parents former life in England is not always reliable. She may have not married in Sussex.
Another avenue to investigate parents is christening of Griffith TREE in 1808 based on age at death and 1838 Aust immigant arrival doc.
Elizabeth KING in 1810 based on age at death and 1838 Aust immigant arrival doc. (death cert records both parent unknown)
It is believed they came from Northiam in Sussex. Immigrant record indicated they were shoemaker and shoebinder respectively and set up a shop in AUST.
So this is the extend of my knowledge to date.

From SMI

Marriage in Brighton 24 Oct 1814
George Tree (Bach)
Elizabeth Howell (Sp botp (B))

Marriage in Winchelsea,  East Sussex 4 Nov 1807
Joseph Tree
Elizabeth Gallop

Marriage in Beckley,  East Sussex 14 Dec 1804
Henry Tree from Northiam
Elizabeth Uptin

Marriage in Brighton 15 Apr 1789
John Tree (Bach)
Elizabeth Gilbert (Sp botp (lic))

all probably of little use to you.

One way forward would be to locate the christening record for Griffess (assumes that he was christened).

Hi Tim,

Did you ever manage to find out any further information on the parents of Griffith Tree?  He is my great, great grandfather.

Cheers,

Colin
