Mary Theresa Fitzgerald DOB 1828/9 Cork birth help please.
« on: Saturday 17 December 05 18:23 GMT (UK) »
Hello
Can anyone access parish records for the birth of Mary Theresa Fitzgerald in 1828/9 Cork , unfortunately I don't know the townland/parish but only know she came to England around 1851 as she appears on the 1851 census for Greenwich and stayed in England until she died in 1900. All census records say she came from Ireland and one said Cork.
She would have lived near the Military Barracks in Cork as she met a soldier and came to England to marry him. Her family were also quiet well off in the 1850-60's and were Catholics.
Sorry thats all I know hope someone can help :D
Best wishes
Jenny :)

Hi Jenny - I have a connection to the Fitzgeralds in Buttevant, where the military barracks were located. The list of baptism records from St Mary's RC Church in Buttevant I have was photocopied straight from their typed up records and covers about 12 Fitzgerald entries.

The only Mary on this list was baptised on 28/07/1816. parents were Jas(James) Fitzgerald & Ellen Coughlin. They also had a son Wm (William)  baptised 17/02/1820.

I have to say though that this list is not in date or alphabetical order - it starts with 1843, has 1816 in the middle, and ends on 1825 - so the logic of the order eludes me! lol

The PP at Buttevant is quite helpful if you wanted to write to be absolutely certain.

Goodluck withyour search...Sharon

Hello Sharon,
thanks for the advice I really didn't know where to start.
Do you have an address for the PP please.
Also what other parishes would be near the barracks just in case this does not work out.
Many thanks for your help.
Merry Christmas
Jenny

Hi Jenny -

thislink will take you to PP names & addresses:

http://www.sci.net.au/userpages/mgrogan/cork/cork_rc.htm

this one will give you townlands and neighbouring parishes to Buttevant - this site is wellworth exploring:

http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/fuses/townlands/index.cfm?fuseaction=TownlandsInCivil&civilparishid=9&civilparish=Buttevant&citycounty=Cork

Good luck...maybe you could keep me up to date with your Fitzgeald research in case ours are connected? Regards - Sharon

 :)

Seasons Greetings Jenny,

I hope you have not yet written to that PP. I recommend you include a donation towards his parish funds when you write to him, Jenny. PPs are busy men and apart from visiting their parishioners they have to take care of Christenings, Funerals and Marriages as well as finding the time to prepare for Masses. They do look ups in their records from the goodness of their heart.

All the best, Chris  8)

Hi Jenny,

I hope you did not send any cash donation in the post.

Send them a cheque or an international money order instead.

I lost money this way and the pp never got my letters with the cash donations at all. 20 euros vanished!

If you must send the cash, please ensure that you send it by the registered mail (I think, it is called signed for delivery nowadays).

Fingers crossing for you...

Kind regards,

Tees

Hi Jenny, There were barracks all over Co Cork. She could of met her husband in Buttevant, Cork City, Ballincollig, Cobh, Fermoy the list goes on. I think your best bet would be to find who her husband served with. For example if he served tith cavalary or Artillery it would be probablyin Ballincollig . I know its vague but you could end up sending donations all over the place. CI

Hi CI,

How can you endorse sending the donations knowing well that many of them may be going missing or lost in the post?

Won't sending the donation in the form of cheque or money order a better alternative?

Kind regards,
